60' Charter Cat; Moon Dragon rescue
Partially submerged off of the North Carolina coast. 4 sailors rescued by the USCG.
"The catamaran crew indicated that while at sea, both their port and starboard side hatches broke leading to catastrophic flooding which forced them to abandon ship,” the news release said.
Weather at the scene was winds of 35 miles per hour and seas at 11 to 12 feet, the Coast Guard said."
It will be interesting to learn more about the factors contributing to this event.

Re: 60' Charter Cat; Moon Dragon rescue
Have to admit I was really struggling to understand how a sailing Catamaran that took on water through a broken port, even on each side, could capsize.
Now I get it.
This is the boat, plus loaded up with an incredible amount of weight. A bit more like a deep draft barge with a small tunnel down the middle.
Not seaworthy in my opinion

Re: 60' Charter Cat; Moon Dragon rescue
I am 90% sure this was the same Moon Yacht that was at the boat show">Annapolis boat show. I thought it was the worst excuse for a sailboat I had seen in a long time.
Totally built by people who either were out to make a quick buck, and/or had NO IDEA how a boat needs to be built.
Things like sharp pointy corners on furniture that I would not tolerate even in a land kitchen, to stairways with NO handrails. Just superficial things, but they sure jump out at me even on a 5 minute walkthrough at the show. I didn't think it worth a harder look at more substantial issues. A huge boat, and a hot mess.
I am not at all surprised it met its end in relatively mild conditions.

Re: 60' Charter Cat; Moon Dragon rescue
A common saying is to avoid buying hull number one.
USCG report says 140m SE of Wilmington in 30Kn winds and 12ft seas, wonder what wind direction was v the Gulf Stream could have been nasty.
THE AIS name seems to be Moon Yacht, last Marine Traffic record was off Virginia 3 days ago.

Guessing this sailing party barge stuffed the nose in a wave trough and took on hundreds if not thousands of gallons really quickly.

Wonder where they were headed being 140 miles off North Carolina? If this is the boat, maybe back to the Virgina Islands. https://www.citimarineyachts.com/co-...ds-us-8822552/

Moon Yacht is a completely new quality in the world of catamarans. Our inspiration was the moon and its amazing power. Moon from the earliest times helps in navigation and allows you to maintain a good course. Its positive energy affects each of us. It improves and increases inner strength, and in us it triggered a new idea.
Our project is a response to the growing customer demand for spacious and specially personalized catamarans.

I can’t even begin to imagine this displacement when in charter mode. 60,000lbs? More?
Look at the foot of the main and jib. They have the foot of the job going to a track on the flybridge! Lol
The main just got cut shorter and shorter at the foot to accommodate the flybridge.
So basically no sail area and tremendous displacement. A trawler with sails for charter purposes.

I would say WAY more than 60,000 lbs. Probably closer to 90,000 lbs

Oh good god. Could it be that heavy?
See? I wasn’t kidding. I am having trouble imagining how heavy this thing is. Ha ha.
There is no way a properly designed catamaran even with holes drilled in the bottom would capsize.
Look at that gunBoat 55 that washed up in the UK after having some problems off of the Carolinas.
That thing was all the way up to the deck house. But it did not invert. Even though all the bad weather on a lengthy “no sails, no motors” Atlantic crossing.
The design of this boat is just so bad. It hurts my brain.

Here's a photo I took of Moon Dragon, in all of its corpulent glory. Ye gods... those sterns.

"Our inspiration was the moon and its amazing power. Moon from the earliest times helps in navigation and allows you to maintain a good course. Its positive energy affects each of us. It improves and increases inner strength, and in us it triggered a new idea."
The above from their website.
Aren't you glad that the moon improves and increases your inner strength from its positive energy?
Another paragraph told of how they combined a "Traditional sailing boat" with "Modern styling".
How quaint, after they fire all the ad writers, the "designer" should go back to work for a toy company, (or a movie studio).
