Just passing through, I had a similar experience in that exact same place about 10 years ago. Sounds like not much has changed.

Thank you for the up-date, Mike :-)

Those are appropriately serious charges. Now let's see what the court does with them.

It takes going fast and brainless to get killed and kill.

Why would anyone do this is a proof we are not all the same species.

b.
The billions of human beings, living today, all belong to one species: Homo sapiens.
As in all species, there is variation among individual human beings, from size, and shape, to skin tone, and eye colour, etc. But, we are much more alike, than we are different.
We are, in fact, remarkably similar.
We all have roots, extending back 300,000 years, to the emergence of the first modern humans, in Africa; and back more than 6 million years, to the evolution of the earliest human species, in Africa.
Our human story, of adaptation, and survival, is written in our genes, in every cell of our bodies, as well as in the fossil, and BEHAVIOURAL evidence.

Re: 3 Dead, 5 Injured

It does seem to be as many of us called it (many, not all). But we'll have to await the final verdict from the court.

It is dismaying to see how callous some Homo sapiens treat the lives of their fellows, but it's certainly not unusual for our species. One only has to read the front page to see the daily body count from the current wars. Heck, just drive a busy highway and you'll encounter plenty of jerks who think their need for speed outweighs the lives of the people they put at risk all around them.

Sadly, it's all very human.

The latest court update:

Bail hearing delayed for man charged in Bobs Lake boat crash

Quote:
A full-day bail hearing for the accused in a fatal boat collision on Bobs Lake was postponed until the end of the month, a Kingston courtroom heard Thursday, as his defence team sought more time to build its case.

Re: 3 Dead, 5 Injured

Thanks for the update, Mike.

I thought this paragraph from the link was interesting:

"Police are still seeking any information that people may have about the collision. Anyone who has information and has not yet spoken with investigators is asked to contact the Frontenac OPP Detachment at 1-888-310-1122 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or ontariocrimestoppers.ca. "

It's been a long time since May. Three young people dead, five injured, and he's not yet had his bail hearing.

Yeah... it does seem to be dragging out a long time. Hopefully the charges won't be dismissed because of undue delays. That's happened too often in our under-services court system.

It is interesting that the accused has been in custody since his arrest, and remains so. I'm not sure if anything can be read into that. Normally bail hearings happen quickly. The latest delay was initiated by the defence.

If a proceeding is delayed for a lengthy period of time, and there is no legitimate reason for said delay, then the proceeding may be dismissed entirely on the basis of delay in accordance with Ontario Superior Court Rule 24.01(1). This is especially true where important evidence or witnesses have been lost, as a result of the delay, thereby jeopardizing the ability to hold a fair trial.

Re: 3 Dead, 5 Injured

Would it be possible under the Canadian legal system to allow someone to remain in custody voluntarily, for fear of retaliation, or to just commence punishment in the case of so many counts? Or would they go along with delaying tactics? hoping for a dismissal?

No wonder the police are still asking for witnesses to come forward!

Re: 3 Dead, 5 Injured

In the US most inland lakes have a "no wake after dark" speed limit. If Canada does the same or similar its pretty obvious who's at fault. But it would be nice if the report mentioned lights or anything really. Oops, didn't see he'd been charged. Pretty lame charges though...

The accused operator of the "speed boat" is facing (according to news reports):

Quote:
"...three counts of dangerous operation of a conveyance causing death, three counts of dangerous operation of a conveyance causing bodily harm, three counts of impaired operation causing death, and three counts of impaired operation causing bodily harm."
