Go to Yachtworld, and you can waste several hours looking at boat porn.

Re: What are the most popular boat company's for new and old boats?
This is like asking which model car is popular but for boats there are even more.
So here is a very partial list of some of the popular boats mainly from the bigger companies, old and new, in no particular order, just as I think of them..
Pearson
Morgan
Catalina
Hunter
Beneteau
Jeanneau
Island Packet
Pacific Seacraft
Tayanna
Hinkley
Moody
CS
C&C
CSY
Oyster
O'Day
Spencer
Swan
Cabo Rico
Valiant
Tartan
Cape Dory
Most of these companies are medium to large boat builders and produced hundreds or even thousands of boats. I'm sure I have forgotten lots and these are just monohulls. Catamarans will be another list.

Thanks that's what I wanted. You can make a list of catamaran list. I'm just looking at them.i want to have a sailing lesions for a birthday present. I'm just researching which are the best. I read in the complete idiot's guide to sailing that most people have sailing boats for about four years. Do you think that's true?

Hard to believe that Columbia didn't make that list.

Re: What are the most popular boat company's for new and old boats?
When it comes to new boats, I think the most popular brands actually vary by area, and in my opinion directly depend on how active/effective the local dealers are in a given geographical location. Also, there is an "amplification" effect going on with new boats. When you buy a new boat, you are likely to be biased towards a brand that you are familiar with by seeing other new boats at your local dock or by seeing the dealer advertising in your local sailing rag.
One easy thing to do to understand which brands are most popular in your specific area is to take a stroll around a large marina and just take note of the new boats. It should be pretty obvious which brands are trendy.

You forgot:
Tanzer
Mirage
Niagara
Bayfield
Whitby
Cal
Paceship
Nonsuch
Grampian
Aloha
Gozzard
Kirby
My list is mostly canadian, but there was a real boom in yacht manufacturing in Canada in the early 70's. Very few of those companies are still around, but most of the boats are!

I wonder about your name "Salty sailer" Have you ever sailed on salt water?
Don't worry about that, just get yourself down to the sea and look up sailing clubs. Skippers always need crew, ask around and you'll find a job. Don't do big trips just day sailing to start. If you really want a boat the make will jump at you.
I always wanted a boat, at the age of 10 I bought the wood for the stringers and transom in order to build a rowing boat, it lay in the yard for a couple of years until my Dad removed it. Of course a kid of 10 could not do it but the NEED was there from a very early age. I have sailed now for about 50 years.
It is in the blood. Good luck in you quest.

My name just popped up in my head as I was signing up. The only boats I have been on are a fishing boat that an old friend of Dad's had. A fresh water catamaran that my dad's roommate has at his lake cottage, wail watching boat in Alaska, and faerie boats, canoe. But all my life I have always loved the water lakes, rivers, streams, swamps, wetlands, estuaries, the ocean. Underwater life. I have always wanted to sail but now I really coat the bug for sailing.

Your list is already on the internet, just do a search for boat/dealers.
