Having been sailing for a while, it is interesting to see how this all has evolved. Some boats that I thought were first tier back in the eighties are definitely getting long in the tooth. I'm thinking of all those full-keeled beauties with
teak decks and lots o
bronze. Cabos and HansCs etc. Maybe Passport. HR seems to have stood up nicely (but those damnable decks again!) How have the Oh-so-classy Oysters hold up to the test of time?
And the Bay Yugo back in the eighties (Hunter) didn't all up and sink like we thought they would! Sure, their stanchions were noodles back then. But they have proven out that market niche, and have tons of boats still sailing.
Middle tier boats that seem to have had their meddle tested in my mind are
Pearson,
Sabre, Bristol and Caliber. I used to think
Beneteau was trash, but after a few charters, I realized this was more about my snobbery. Their boats perform and they might have more examples out there than anyone. They meet their market niche with decent boats.
These days, I've gone down the
multihull path, and that's a whole different ball of wax!
