Starter for Universal Diesel 5416 - Westerbeke M20

I am urgently looking for a starter for a Universal Diesel 5416 (1980) or for a Westebeke M20 (same engine).

My starter burned out and not all parts to rebuild it are available. I am stranded with my boat and need help. Anybody has a defunct 5416 that might have the starter attached, or the starter itself, please contact me asap.

I have an O'day 30 from 1980 if anyone knows about an O'day decommissioned on the hard, that might be another option.

Thanks and fair winds.

Assume you don't want to pay the crazy prices charged by Universal for a new one. Have you taken it to a shop that rebuilds starters and alternators? Find it hard to believe they can rebuild it for you. Note also this is a marinized Kubota engine. A starter from a Kubota dealer will be much less expensive than from a Universal dealer. A cheap Chinese one off of Amazon or ebay is an option, but reviews of reliability are not good.

Pretty sure that motor is based on the Kubota L175. The Universal part # is 298783.

Maniac Electric Motors claims to have the Kubota version and lists the 5416/M20 as a fit. Have never done business with them. The page may be useful just in finding cross reference information if nothing else.

PS - if you told us where you are it might help in finding something local.

The Kubota L175 or L185 is too small. I found a rebuilt Denso 028000-336 the nose fits, but they rebuilt it too long and it doesn't fit into the tied space...:-(
I am in the New York area.

There is a place in Syosset called Sailon that rebuilds starters, generators etc, and has a very good reputation among club members "who know" (retired aircraft mechanic) Where in NY are U?

To further above, I had my M20 starter and alternator rebuilt at a normal automotive alternator shop. Good shops can rewind the internal coils as well. Some have same-day service.

What do you mean by too small? You mean it looks too small, or won't fit?

The modern geared starters are much smaller and lighter than the ancient lump that was originally fitted, but start the engine much better while using less current.

Also, the smaller size means the bolts are much easier to access.

You want to get the modern Kubota geared starter that fits your block. It's a much better option in so many ways. It's a real waste of time looking for the original style of motor.

The geared starters are all over Ebay and the tractor parts suppliers. 5 years on mine, works beautifully.

I painted mine with bronze Rustoleum paint, which is close enough to Universal gold.

Re: Starter for Universal Diesel 5416 - Westerbeke M20

That's wierd, as the Denso 028000-336 is the correct part number for the starter for your block.

Try another one. I don't think the one you tried, that didn't fit, was the right part.

Excellent advice on this thread. Take your old starter and the one that doesn't fit to the rebuild shop recommended along with the parts list from another poster, and I'm pretty sure you will have a solution.

I also have a starter problem on a Westerbeke W100. I would like to know what engine this is, I was told either a Nissan or a Perkins 6-247. I am in North Central FL. and Arco, in Pensacola is a great resource for new and rebuilt starters, and yes they have starters for Westerbeke as well.

Re: Starter for Universal Diesel 5416 - Westerbeke M20

Try to identify the part number, of the starter, a good source for cross references is: IAT
However unfortunately I didn't find W 100 there.
