Re: Seawind 1160

Thanks. I'd definitely upgrade your sails to the Doyle BX-Tech's, or similar high quality laminated aramid sail. You'll definitely more UV exposure down there, but so long as you take care of your sails, I see no reason you couldn't get a minimum of 6 years out of them. Just make sure to have a sail maker inspect them annually, and make appropriate repairs along the way.

As for hydranet-- that's really a heavy duty cruising sail material. Great for passage making, but really too heavy to take full advantage of lighter winds and certainly not ideal for racing.

I hope this helps. I'm guessing your taking delivery from Steve at Finish Line? If so, he can definitely provide solid input on sail choice.

I am in South FL so I will have much more UV abuse to deal with.
In Florida you are also dealing with mildew. On my Seawind 1000 we had Pentex laminate sails that held their shape much better than dacron, but after 8 years started showing mildew. The mildew didnt affect performance though. For my Lite, we went with black laminate sails (GPL Lite Skin) for performance, but also because the black wont show mildew. We are religious about using the sail cover when not sailing.
