Newbee looking for forgiving cruiser

I say newbee because I have owned many power boats. Its been 10 years since I've sailed. Would like to spend more time cruising blue water and want the ability to go anywhere if that's what happens. Been looking for about a month now in the 45ft range, 100k to 150k budget. I want a medium to heavy displacement only because I am assuming she will be more forgiving as I come up the learning curve. Full keel or skeg rudder. Currently looking at Vagabond 42, Tayana 42, Hylas 44, Hallberg-Rassy 42, Tayana 45/48. A Nauticat 44 would be nice but haven't seen many around.

Not sure if a Hunter 456 would be as forgiving as the others but it's definitely in the price range.

My preference is to cruise by sail and not performance sailing.

Re: Newbee looking for forgiving cruiser

Most things Tayana, or that you'll find on bluewaterboats.org may leave you wishing for something more sporty not too far down the road. Especially most full keeled boats, cut-away forefoots included. Due to their large amounts of wetted surface area, & low SADR's. A relatively easy way to check is by comparing their PHRF ratings to other boats. That, or their Polar Projections (Polars). Not that you need a racer, but needing 20kts+ of breeze to get up to hull speed does leave some folks wanting.

The reason I mention it is not based on my background in racing, but in that unless you always plan to sail in areas notorious for lots of wind, you'll want a boat that's able to sail well in all conditions. In particular, upwind, as well as in light air. Meaning 10kts & less. And if you buy something that's already a lackluster perfomer when unladen, by the time you add several tons of cruising gear, you'll wind up firing up the diesel a lot. So that if you like to sail... doing so will be a lot more of a rarity. And you'd perhaps be better off sticking with powerboats.

Many of the others that you've named are great boats, & unless you go looking for a seagoing Ferrari, you're unlikely to pick something overly high strung.
I'd suggest that you list some of the features, & ameneties that you think you'd like to have, & then seeing what boats tick a lot of those boxes. And while you're doing that, go sailing on as many different boats as you can, in all weather conditions.

There are some great tips & insights into picking boats in the thread "what's the best boat you've ever owned" (or similar wording). Also, check out the website www.Mahina.com They teach expeditioning, & cruising, on their Hallberg-Rassy. In addition to professionally helping folks to find boats. Including some free self-education & assessment questionaires geared towards such on their website, gratis.

Edit: If you want the full Undergrad through PhD info on boatbuying, do a pit of perusing of this post & it's attachments/links. And yeah, it helps if you're a masochist

Re: Newbee looking for forgiving cruiser

A friend is selling his CSY 44 Pilot House.
Located St. Maarten.
Well equipped and a sturdy and seaworthy cruising boat.
Very reasonable priced due to health issues.
(Cruising was good for a few years, but probably over now: Go before it is too late)

Re: Newbee looking for forgiving cruiser

Where are you? Or where do you want the boat to be? I think it is wise to look locally, you might be amazed to find your dreamboat is already where you want it... even if it doesn't have a for sale sign on it (yet.)

We are ready to sell our 42 foot ketch which we have lived on for 9 years in the Caribbean. We sailed down here from Newport, RI in 2009.
This boat has everything you need to blue water sail.
