Need a countess 44 rudder

I am looking to buy a rudder for a Pearson Countess 44. If anyone has one or has any leads where one might be at a boat salvage I would be more than happy to call. Thank you for your time!!

I wish you luck. As crazy as this may sound, try eBay. I was browsing there one time and someone was selling a rudder for my 60 year old boat! Ya never know...

Make one?? If that is a pic of you boat, you have already have a template.

We made our new one out of Coosa, but a ply core would also work.

I wish that was a picture of my rudder...if it was I would be sailing south to Florida. I did like the idea of using coosa board instead of plywood. I just do not now how the structural interity of coosa board compares to plywood.

Re: Need a countess 44 rudder

We used the blue water version w/both strands and sheets embedded in the HDU board. Had our new rudder for a few years now and has held up well.

Look up "Coosa" to find a comparison table for strength, etc.

The glass skin will take up most of the load if thick enough (biaxial cloth, 1/4 thick would be overkill). More interesting, given the shape of your aperture, is the embedded hardware and upper and lower rudder shaft.

Re: Need a countess 44 rudder

I agree, the hardware will be very interesting to see. I can only see based on the video that I have from the diver. Good diver by the way. The hull is in excellent shape, no blistering or anything. I would build my own if it was just fiberglass...me personally, I would build it completely from fiberglass (Complete fan of overkill) and never deal with coring failure ever again. However, based on how the upper and lower posts are separate from one another based on what I can see from the damaged areas, it will probably need a new lower support post. I am not much of a stainless TIG welder, so I am probably going to go the route of having a company build a new one. I will know more when we get it out of the water next Sunday. I hate that I cannot do this myself, but sometimes you have to just defer to a company and people who do this everyday for a living and have access to a larger marine brain trust than I do.

Re: Need a countess 44 rudder

Fwiw, if you remove the rudder and strip the cladding you will see the structure. You can then re-use or copy the structure. Getting a regular fabricator to weld up your structural SS won't be bad, especially 8f you do the cutting bending and fitting first.
If you first make some molds/templates of whatever is left of your rudder, it will help when forming the cladding.
