Reminds me of the guy I saw sitting at a street corner in Madrid with his little dog along with a cardboard sign asking for donations for his new Ferrari..
A little humour goes a long way..

I am fairly long in the tooth and I remember when people on street corners had signs that said " will work for boat".

I can hardly believe I’m even responding, but I’m with fatherchronica. We just bought our 8 year old cat after saving 15 years. And we still pay the bank!

Work for your boat.

“buying” the boat is absolutely the cheapest part of the experience. Regardless of size, quality or condition, you are not ready ...

Re: Looking For a Free Catamaran to call home

I recently sold a 35’ catamaran that we cruised in the Bahamas and along the US East coast for 20 years. The vessel was 5 years old when we bought it and in excellent condition, having been professionally maintained. We maintained it to a high standard , doing most of the work ourselves. We had the requisite experience, skills, and tools to do the work efficiently and well. We kept detailed records of maintenance and upgrading costs and time doing maintenance. On average, the cost was around $7000 per year and 154 hours of our labor. Maintaining a 45’ cat would probably require twice as much labor and $.

Even if you survive restoring a “free” vessel, the ongoing costs of owning, mooring, maintaining, and cruising a cat that size will bankrupt you.

Get a grip. There is no free lunch. Get a 20-25’ pocket cruiser instead, and have fun sailing it.

Good luck!
Good post. Thanks. That 28 ft Catalina sounds good. They stated engine works. New sails, and rigging, and it will be a good boat for someone. I would sail the Caribbean with it.

Check with shipyards, and marinas. They often have boats with outstanding bills that exceeded owners expectations, or ability to pay.

A few grand, and a paper clearing the lien and its yours.

My wife and I have a dream of getting a catamaran and living aboard it sailing place to place. Picking up people and helping them learn to sail. Spreading the love and joy of the ocean to others who cant afford a boat(like us at the moment)

I am hoping to find someone in a giving mood that wants to give their catamaran away to a good home. My wife and I are wanting to move onto a Catamaran and sail around. We currently don't have the money to purchase a boat but who knows maybe by pure chance, luck, or Gods grace we will get offered an amazing opportunity!

Were willing to travel to get to the boat and so far our favorite boats have been Knysnas and Privileges 40-50 foot range. But beggars cant be chooser
As I read this, I am laughing so hard I cannot think of an appropriate comment.

My favorite for the highway on-ramp grifters is a guy I saw in the SF Bay Area at the meter getting on I880. The sign read "Family kidnapped by ninjas, need $ for karate lessons". He got $1 from me.

Re: Looking For a Free Catamaran to call home

Once you get realistic, unless this is a joke, there are plenty of cheap boats like the below one waiting to be bought and fixed up. If you can't afford that then you should give up your dream or get another job.

I sympathize with you. I’ve been looking for a free billion dollars and am willing to travel to get it. Seriously, you want someone to give you a 40 - 50’ catamaran? The land term junk and the nautical term salvage are synonymous. Before you pursue your dream any further, check a few prices on restoring a boat of this size. One reply advised you to start with a much smaller boat, I second that. Sometimes ones dreams can’t get over that high wall of reality.

Does anyone have a Pershing or a Viking, not more than five years old, 80 - 100’ that they would like to donate? Preferably with fuel tanks full. My 43 sometimes feels a little cramped.

Re: Looking For a Free Catamaran to call home

I am really interested in learning how to fly. I am looking for a free 747. It does not need to be fancy or anything. It should be flyable with four low time engines and a bedroom of course. The instruments dont need to be the latest and greatest but for your liability they should be close.

I have watched many YouTube videos and play online flying games so how hard can it be.

I can pick it up after Thursday of next week.

Oh, can you fill it up for me?

And for the OP....you said you have $250,000 to spend ...in the Thread "Re: Looking for a Cruising Catamaran 40-50’ when the guy asked what your budget was....

$250,000 unless owner financing or rent to own contract is an option."

Seems very very "fishy" to me.

Re: Looking For a Free Catamaran to call home

Unless the gods smile on you, You likely don’t want a free boat of any size let alone one pushing 50 feet, it could very well end up costing you tens of thousands of dollars to make it safe in the most basic way. But stranger things, I for one hope you get smiled upon. But don’t hold your breath
