Than make an offer. The Sailing Uma people spent $3,000 On a 36’ and worked a year on the boat before they could sail it. They did structural repairs and prepared the boat for future work. Four years later they crossed the Atlantic and then spent more time improving on the boat.

Good luck.

Re: Looking for a cheap sailboat project for adventure series

Totally do-able because I have done it.
I Bought a Grampian 26 North of Toronto, Ontario, Canada with trailer/5 sails/outboard/ PFD's Flare gun et al etc for $800 Cad/ $600 Usd.. This boat was lonely so I acquired 3 more for the price of free to $300.including cradles etc, some sails etc etc .
Remember old sails make great laptop bags etc to market on your channel ...
Taking the best of the best & selling or recycling the rest.
My current economics is a very good (free) boat& two trailers & cash for upgrades.

There is no better way to know your boat; than intimately....

"Sweat equity is still cheaper than sitting in a bar"

Note of caution; Make sure to search there is someone local to take your scrap especially the plastics/Fiberglass. can be a costly disposal.

I would also recommend you get into a guild/boat commune of sorts.
Whether formally or casually.
Reachout for help/assistance, start your channel with a group/volunteers/crew or you will never get anything completed
Nail your plan as a sign in a visible place ..
It is EASY to get distracted & derailed

Re: Looking for a cheap sailboat project for adventure series

I just bought a sailboat for a dollar. She’s 34 feet and would do coastal sailing quite nicely. However (and we knew this from the beginning) a free boat will take a lot of money before she’s ready to go anywhere. After a month and a half we’ve poured about $5,000 and tons of sweat and skills into her. You should expect the same.

I will assume that you already have a YouTube channel / name. I'll bite and subscribe to see how you make out.

No negative comments here as I just don't see the point in raining on someone's parade. I may learn something

I'm upsizing so my Bristol 24 is available in Annapolis and it will take you anywhere and I offered to the last caller for $500, so why not you too?

Re: Looking for a cheap sailboat project for adventure series

I got a free boat , 10 years on the hard , engine turned over by hand ok . Ten minutes after shaking hands the free boat turned into a 700$ boat . Thats a 8 mile tow on memorial weekend in Connecticut. Then boatyard fees by the month. Four months to get in water into 1000 month surprise slip!!! Dont even ask!
Lots of dumpster diving in fancy boat yard. Paid for half yhe rent on thrown away 10cent returns bottles n cans .
Nothins free cept advice, and sometimes free advice if followed is expensive.

Read joshua slocums book and invest in testicular protective device . If you’ve never had a blister or slivers , prepare for the numeration of them .

I may have a 36’ cruiser available that meets you’re requirements if the Wife gets her way. However I’m still fighting my corner!😳

Re: Looking for a cheap sailboat project for adventure series

You are welcome to PM me on this.

The yard where our boat is stored is in Harwich on Cape Cod. A Cal 30 Mk 1 is abandoned nearby in the yard and the yard has said they will allow anyone who can get a title to the boat to have the boat. The "cost" of the boat is getting the documentation in your name. Pretty much what is going to happen with any abandoned boat.

The Cal 30 Mk 1 is a very well respected boat considered well designed, built and to be a good sailor. See... https://sailboatdata.com/sailboat/cal-30

Pictures of the boat can be seen on my blog, AppliedSailing-Technical Support for Sailors: Vega Refit:Oops! It is a Cal 30 Mark 1

As info, my wife and I thought about it and passed since we already have a boat we enjoy working on and sailing. We have renovated other people's boats and enjoyed that but don't need another boat.

Full disclosure: I have no financial interest in the boat or the boat yard. If they change their mind, it will be as much a surprise to me as to you!
