Owned hull #3, it was a solid boat. The only core is in the deck and by the way that boat looks it is not going to be a problem. The boat got too small with my growing family about 10 years ago but for a single it has plenty of room. Owned/sailed it for 14 years.

The main cabin is a great place for two adults to sleep, center of boat down low by the keel nice and stable.

Very sea kindly and faster than she looks as well.

Yes i have to agree. I have a 31 ft HR Monsun from 1974 and it is quite capable of doing what he wants to do and the boat is worth about $30,000.
You can travel and cross oceans in a garbage-can if you have the balls to do it.

I always thought they were solid GRP including the decks.. but then again, I've never owned one.
But.. it is one of the boats listed in Atom Voyages which many here often mention..

Be prepared to get down and dirty, and scrounge around.
People have sailed around the world in lesser boats than these.

Just a quick look at the first 2 listings. The first one has been removed. The second one has been on the hard for 10 years!!!! You don’t think that’s going to cost to get it ready? New Standing Rigging, new Running Rigging, New Bottom Paint, New Batteries, Polish the diesel, clean the water tank and replace all the hoses attached to the water tanks, complete service of the engine if its even able to run after sitting for 10 years. Wiring, electronics, etc.

Even if you knew how to do everything yourself you are still talking $10k’s assuming there us nothing major wrong. If it was blocked slightly wrong the hull could be deformed especially in the Alaskan weather.

I saw guys sailing around the world (including Drake’s passage!) in boats I wouldn’t take around Vancouver Island. They were very creative, scrounged like mad, accepted leaky interiors, and made do without. But they sailed world passages!

So…would I do it….no.

Ya but we're talking $10k for a great boat. If you can find them for sale, they usually bring in $45k. True..."Even if you knew how to do everything yourself", but this is what this thread is really about...DIY'ers. Unfortunately the thread has turned into tire kickers and nay-sayers. On the other hand, this thread has been good for me as I will be selling my Westsail and preparing for the slew of dreamers.

There is no such thing as a maximum amount to spend on your boat. The good news is if you get the right one at least it probably won't all need to be at the same time. The bad news is you have to be ready to put in the time to get it ready to go, learning your boat inside and out. This post looks like another troll post to me though, its been 15 minutes so it was due.

Don't let the naysayers get to you. They don't understand "needs a bit of repair". If you can do most of the work yourself and if you don't mind getting sweaty and dirty, there are options out there. Come down to South Texas (south of Houston). Make a round of small marinas and boat yards. What you seek is out there in plain sight. Craigslist is a great resource. Here's a sample close to me. I know that there is a C&C 38 in pretty solid condition, needs some cosmetics, but not much. Look for it on Sailboat Listings. Price is currently $25k but make an offer, I think you could have it for $20
