Jason 35 for sale
Melatar is a Jason 35 designed by Ted Brewer and built by Miller Marine on Bainbridge Island, Washington. She was launched in 1980. Melatar is an excellent cruising/liveaboard boat, with a very roomy galley and main cabin, and abundant stowage.
Melatar is rigged as a cutter, and balances beautifully under staysail and yankee. The inner stay is easily removable when sailing with the genoa. She also has an asymetrical spinnaker.
The hull and deck are heavily built from fiberglass, and insulated above the waterline. The exterior and interior are fitted out in teak.
Melatar is well equipped for Northwest cruising with a Yanmar diesel and high-output alternator; solar panels, radar; refrigeration; Lavac head and Lectrasan treatment system; and ample tankage (100 gallons of water and 70 gallons of diesel). She traveled north to Alaska in 2016 and is ready to go again this season.
Price: $35,000
Location: San Juan Islands, Washington

Re: Jason 35 for sale
Thanks for the comments. The Jason is a very good cruising boat, I think most are still based in the Northwest. The skin on frame dinghy was a one-off design, built as a prototype some years ago. Nylon skin with hypalon coating. 11' long, 2 rowing stations, a lot of fun.

Melatar is still for sale, a fine cruising boat for anyone located in the Pacific Northwest.

Re: Jason 35 for sale
Hello,
I am interested in your boat. How are the settee berths configured (2 singles, or single + double?). Do you have any more photos? Interested in how the table is set up. Are there grab handles in the salon? How does she sail compared to a Westsail 32? How long have you owned her?
Thanks.

Re: Jason 35 for sale
The saloon has two singles, one of which can be made into a double. There are teak grab handles all along the cabin/deck joint. The table stows on the partial bulkhead between the galley and saloon, and sets up with attachments on the bulkhead and 1 leg. It's very sturdy. She sails well. I haven't sailed a Westsail 32, but looking at the numbers the Jason 35 has about the same WL length, less displacement, less wetted surface, a finer entry, higher SA/displacement ratio, and a lower displacement/length ratio -- all of which suggest she should sail better in lighter air, point better, with probably a similar top speed. We have owned her about 15 years. She is for sale because we've bought a bigger boat, are heading offshore next year. We have a website with more images and info

I have read about this design suffering weather helm, which is solved by moving the mast 18" forward. Do you know if this boat has had this modification? Have you taken it offshore, or just coastal cruising? Most of the other Jason 35s I've seen have a quarter berth, but less fuel tankage. I assume the larger fuel tank(s) eat up the quarterberth? What kind of stowage is accessible from the cockpit?
Thanks

Re: Jason 35 for sale
Yes, the design did have problems originally, which Ted Brewer addressed by moving the mast. The mast position was moved on this boat by Miller Marine. The only evidence that this was done is an extra set of chainplates aft of the aft lowers. She balances well with main and genoa up to 15 knots +, or with staysail and yankee.
We have not cruised the boat on a long offshore trip, just coastal (to northern BC).
Yes, the fuel tank is under the stb cockpit locker. Cockpit stowage is a very large locker under the port seat (easily holds staysail, yankee, asymetricial spin, start battery with room to spare); a smaller locker under the stb seat, above the fuel tank, and a huge lazzerete. Lots of cockpit stowage for a double ender.
