I can buy an Islander 36 for $10,000 too. Pretty sure I would have to pour big $$ into it, or not worry about how well it will take care of me.

Not because of such comment as this, but the asking price reduced on SailboatsListings and Yatchhub. $49,500.

Re: ISLANDER 36- Already out there

Wow. I don't NEED another boat. If you had told me it was in French Polynesia, and it was imported with the VAT paid... Hmm.

Anyway, don't fret too much. Keep at it. Too many people make a HUGE mistake by only looking at boats near them, vs those already IN Paradise, ready to go. Crazy. Go see those boats, it's an excuse for a vacation!

Let's be honest. What, maybe 10% of those that SAY they want to go cruising and buy a boat, actually go cruising. Life gets in the way. Passages are daunting.

But your boat is already THERE, and turnkey. If I were in the market for a boat, I'd jump on it. And so should the lurkers and wannabees. This is an opportunity to step on board, take the keys, and be IN the lifestyle today.

Folks, you are missing a REAL opportunity. Take it.

Re: ISLANDER 36- Already out there

Hi Don and Mila,
I'm one of the people who clicked on and watched the video. Nice looking vessel! The reason I didn't make an offer is because I sold my 42 foot sloop a few years ago, and I can't afford to buy another one even if I wanted to return to the cruising lifestyle (sometmes I do). I bought my kauri wood boat in NZ and sailed her around the world, taking 15 years and enjoying myself immensely. It's a time of my life I will never forget. Now I'm 68, and retired to the South Pacific (Taiwan) where my rent is cheap, and I don't have to constantly invest more time and money into my boat. I bought my boat for $50,000, and like you, invested way more than that in upgrades, repairs and upkeep. Unfortunately that extra $100,000 doesn't increase the value of the vessel. I did as you have suggested you may do, sailed her from my last exotic port (Tonga) to NZ, and though she was old (1975), she was built by a well known Kiwi boat builder, and there are still those who appreciate quality over bells and whistles. That said, I sold her for much less than I thought she was worth ($30,000). I suggest sailing her to NZ. Check out the marinas up the river in Whangarei (Riverside was a good one, and reasonably priced). The town has everything you need, and there are plenty of agents who can show Minggat to prospective buyers. Good luck!

Re: ISLANDER 36- Already out there

I have been in sales much of my life. Bought and sold 5 serious cruising boats of my own. I sold my 1973 Cal ll-46 while it was in San Carlos Mexico. I put a decent ad in Latitude 38, and the second serious inquiry bought it. Yes we negotiated on the price some. I paid 73K and sold for 92K after 7 yrs of use. Of the 5 boats (sold 4 of them myself). I only lost money on the brokered boat, but it was at the worst of the recession so used a GOOD broker and he was worth it, although still lost about 20K. ( bought at top of the market, sold at the bottom) But! Sold the boat in 1 month. Boats were sitting on the market for yrs!

My KP 44 bought for $92k in Ft Lauderdale, sold 9 yrs later for 135K in Ventura CA. Many upgrades and good timing. And I included a week on the boat with the new owner, sailing it to Encinata, Mexico and giving him instructions/lessons on the boat ( I am a 100T Master and US Sailing Instructor). So that was able to spice up the deal. Now don’t ask how much I put IN to these boats over the yrs. Lots! You don’t get that back ( that’s the hole in the water part).

Bottom Line: I can tell you exactly what your wonderful I-36 is worth. It is worth………..
What someone is willing to pay for it. Yes that sounds trite but is absolutely the truth.

I agree with you, what you have done to the boat IS worth a more premium price. I always capitalized on this factor when I sold my boats. They were all in top, seriously ready to seriously cruise condition. All the gear was modern enough to count. Your boat will appeal to the right buyer. If you haven’t, put a GOOD ad in Latitude 38 Classyfieds, do it! An incredible tool for selling a boat. Serious lookers want to cruise. My Cal was bought by a Canadian, and it was in Mexico. Latitude 38. And man I know it’s hard but don’t get emotional. It’s a boat. It’s business. I never get insulted on a low ball offer. “ thank you, Mam/ Sir, let me consider and I will get back to you with a counter offer”, And so it goes until the “right “ price and buyer comes. And I think that there is value in Being able to honestly say, “ Put your food and personal belongings on board and take off to New Zealand ASAP”. How much value is the question. Good luck.

This voice of reason helps make the more thoughtless post feel like water off of a ducks back.

The good advice where to list is separate plus.

Huge thanks.
