Re: Freya39 for sale in Thailand
Hi leiftre, just wondering if the boat is still for sale?
If so we'd love to see some more photos and get an idea of the interior layout.
Regards
Dan

While I do like the Freya design, this claim is a bit stretchy IMO, being that it requires AVERAGING well above her hull speed... and no one would claim that the Freya is a planing hull shape.
They do make a comfortable cruiser, and one that is surprisingly fast for her size and type.

Don't be a skeptic. The 200 mile days include 2 kts of current.

Re: Freya39 for sale in Thailand
Actually Jim, the Freya's are capable of 200 mile days, and of course not planing hulls, but on the contrary very serious hull shapes for off shore work. In all three consecutive years the original Freya won the Sydney to Hobart race (the only boat to ever do so), her average speed was 8+knts. Basically 200 nautical mile days. Without a favorable current, but instead eddies that move and counter each other as one moves south. In addition, had the original Freya raced in later races, with that average speed, she would have won in years 2004, 2003, 1993, 1988, 1984, 1981, 1978, 1977, 1976, 1974, 1970, 1968, 1967, and 1966. She was a very impressive boat. I can't comment on what a GRP boat might sail like, but the original wooden one was a rocket ship, and seaworthy. This is an interesting article you might like. https://reiss.wordpress.com/2007/02/...lvorsen-story/

Well, there are eddies in the EAC, but I think that you are misinterpreting their influence on speeds over the ground on that route. I've done the trip from the Sydney area south to Tassie 16 times now, and have experienced favorable currents on all of them, often over two knots. There have been occasional, short lived contrary currents, and some periods of no perceptible current, but in every case there has been overall gain.
I'm sure t hat having a skilled and competitive racing crew in a race prepared boat vastly improves daily runs, especially when compared to a short handed cruising lot, but I'm far from convinced that even that well sailed and competitive Freya could average 200 mile days without the help of some current. That is not to say that they are slow for their size, for they do quite well, and have an excellent reputation for comfort at sea.
And FWIW, many years ago I did a single hand race against one, owned by Richard Spindler (the publisher/editor of Latitude 38) and he whipped my ass convincingly... but I was sailing a 30 footer, so I had an excuse!
I hope that you find a new home for your Freya, and the the new owners appreciate what a fine boat she is!
Jim
