Free big boat

The promised Indiantown Marina (Florida) sailboat auction was a flop, no one showed so no auction was held. The boat I was interested in supposedly had a standing offer way over what I was willing to spend. He did say he had a boat he would give me because he thought it was too nice a sailboat to destroy and he didn't want the expense of tearing it apart and paying the dump fees. He showed me a 46-47ft (?) very shallow draft wide stern boat that appeared in descent shape on the outside. I don't recognize the make but I think it may be a gulfstar or something similar. Bottom appeared clean and the decks seemed solid.
Beware though, I went onboard and this is a true gut job, mold and moisture damage throughout, wiring shot and the diesel seized. The marina owner said he would even throw in free yard time but I've got enough on my plate. I took a couple pics of the exterior and one of the HIN. Maybe someone will recognize this make and model and better yet, someone may find a project. But be forewarned, bring your checkbook for the rehab!

Ugh. What a monster.

Classic case of a "free" sailboat never being free.

There was a reason no one touched her at auction...

I didn't take any pics of the inside. Just know it's going to need a complete interior restoration. It's free so maybe it makes sense to someone. Ask for Scot, the owner of the marina. Good Luck.

True, never free. But this particular boat was not in the auction.

Re: Free big boat

I had a chance a few months ago to take over a 70’ for nearly-free. It’s been moored out in a river for about a year. No machinery runs. Was very tempted also. However I figured a solid $150-200k with me sweating like a guy who sweats a lot!

I did a 65’ project boat years ago when I was a lot younger, but now I’m a lot older.

Doug, sounds like you made the right decision.

Probably true since those costs are getting high.

Could make a good marina live aboard even if the motors don't work. Redoing the interior is too bad if you are handy.

If you are just looking for a marina liveaboard without working motor, go find an old houseboat on the cheap. It will be a lot more comfortable to live on.

Agree about the houseboat, when you can find them and they are not totally rotted out.

Sounds like the sailboat is rotted out also, so if you are going to rebuild a rotted out interior, at least get one that's comfortable.

Actually, the lead is worth ~$1/lb, but then you need to cut up and get rid of the f/g hull.
