Re: Free big boat
I bet that "free" boat turns out to cost someone a LOT of money and time. Otherwise it wouldn't be "free".

This isn't always the case for "free" boats. People get tired of paying of paying marina fees or they just lose interest.
Based on my experience, there are "free" boats that are worth something and take very little to refurbish. Then there are other "free" boats that are too far gone that would take too much time to bring back to life. Can't tell on this one (by a couple of photos), you would need to see it in person.
Also smaller sailboats tend to to have simpler systems which are less costly/easier to fix than something of this size (44').
If the motor was serviceable, some creative person could possibly get it sailing again or make it a live aboard with time/effort and not necessarily a lot of money. Not show boat quality, but functional.

Re: Free big boat
I could be potentially interested. I have nothing but time and the willingness to work with my hands restoring her. Do you have interior pics?

@GILow,
Not a gift horse, but a Trojan horse.

Yeah, but one bare-hull refit has left me way over-confident for the next.
Thankfully I only have room for one boat in my life.

I am on my 4th restore at the moment. The prior two quite extensive with the 1st one being a complete gut and rebuild. I found that one in the Barstow desert with a dead coyote floating in 2 ft. of rain water. Each one I would restore, sail for a few years until the housing market dipped, then sell it and do the same thing with a fixer house.
So here I am on acreage in California, mortgage-less, no dept, a new and hopefully last cruising project. All because I did what I loved...messing around with boats. Along the was were nay-sayers but doing this enhanced my building skills, enhanced my life cruising thousands of miles both US and Mexico. It allowed me to interact with hundreds of new acquaintances and the knowledge accumulated has been a great asset.
I hope that boat goes to a motivated dreamer that has future plans for adventure.

Re: Free big boat
There are boats with serious prestigious pedigree, core quality and design that would worth, to the right people with the time and $$$, the restoration efforts - and the results to be proud of.
This boat will never be there.

A quote from Amelia Earhart..." Adventure is worthwhile in itself."
It ain't about the money

Right. But who's speaking about money? That's already a lost case.
The restorer should be excited and be proud about the result (as a boat, not just a project) - and this is where even the highest expected result does not justify the challenge.

Good point.
And I will take a leaf out of Douglas Adams' fine tome.
The front cover shall read. "Don't Panic!"
The inside page will read, simply, "Don't".
