Re: Doug Peterson 37 $56,000USD, Guaymas, MX

Thanks everyone for the responses! All good things to note and take into consideration. As the boat hasn't sold we are going to return and do the next season in Mexico sailing aboard. We will keep it listed and see how things go, keeping in mind a significant drop in price might have to be the option. Are there other spots in Mexico to consider as far as where people have seen boats sell? La Cruz having more traffic than San Carlos for example? We could sail around and continue upkeep to plan to land at another port then drop the price significantly as well.

Ya know, you could consider sailing it home to Canada, via Hawaii. Lots of empty ocean lovely cruising along the way, 3 days or so hard on the wind from Kauai north, then freeing up a bit. You could do worse.

Definitely would be an interesting and fun trip. It's hard to tell if boats like this would sell better in the PNW vs San Diego or Mexico though as there are lots of these aged boats up there, but there does seem to maybe be a bit more of a market?

I don't know this for a fact, but it seems logical to me, that more people with $$ = a better market. Right now, it seems as if for old cruising boats, it's a buyers market. But the risks go up for the buyer who buys in a foreign country where s/he doesn't speak the language very well, nor understand the customs. While the boat IS posed to take off for the South Pacific, that season does not start till about March. And there's the question of the TIP. If there is a smooth, simple transfer of it to the buyer, it would be a good issue to address if there are any nibbles.

If you are thinking of sailing down here for the season. The markets are best in order below.

1) La Cruz/PV - huge tourist influx due to the proximity of PV. (easy access)
2) LA Paz - Medium tourist action, huge bay for anchoring in, so a lot of sailboats there. (no direct flights)
3) Mazatlán - Several marinas some with slips available, large tourist destination. (easy access)

You could try a broker, those are hit and miss like everywhere.

Good luck, the boat looks good so you just need a motivated buyer.
