I would be very interested in seeing what a person can get for 100K with a
catamaran purchase. It would likely be a vintage catamaran with lots of systems that need upgrades and
replacements.
I purchased a
Privilege 39 new in 1993 from the factory in
France, and after twenty five years I did a
refit on the
boat in
Florida.
I went through every system on the boat and the refit cost more than 100K.
That being said, I did a very extensive refit because I want to sail
offshore through the
south Pacific and back to
Australia and perhaps points beyond.
I could have sailed Exit Only without many of the upgrades and updates, but I would have spent lots of time in
ports around the world fixing stuff that was worn out and breaking from the rigors of sailing
offshore.
An old boat that is worth 100K is a coastal cruiser as far as I am concerned. I personally would not trust my life and the life of my
family to an old yacht that had not been upgraded to offshore status. But that's just me and my comfort zone.
From my own experience, I like to
cruise in a well found yacht that is new or that has just come out of a major refit if I am going to sail around the world. A yacht in excellent condition will not have major
maintenance problems for the first five years after a thorough refit, and that means that I have less worries about sailing offshore during those first five years. That doesn't mean that problems don't occur, but it means that I have pushed the odds in my favor for five years of relatively trouble free sailing after a proper refit.
In my experience, you get what you pay for. And if I am going to sail offshore and around the world, I want to pay upfront and get the pain over with.
Of course, you might get lucky and find an awesome catamaran at an unbelievable
price.
I hope it works out for you.
