Re: Catalina 470

I have to say - this seems like one heck of a good deal, on a very nice boat. If I wasn't tied to land, I'd be a buyer.

With all the uncertain disruptions, you might be more favorably situated on-board - hanging out at a nice anchorage. Good luck-

Thanks, I think it's a very good deal. Most dont realize that the boat purchase is only the first expense, getting it world cruise ready can suck another 50-100k...that money has already been spent on Sukha.Click image for larger version

AND while you're at it...you gotta change your location.... You're not in the Seychelles any longer.....you're in bloody Mexico!

I only remind you as you didn't chime in with a requested opinion on the Seychelles.

That's ok, I'll get over it.

Best of luck selling your yacht.....Looks like a great boat for a really good price!l.

Lol, I use the phone app, thus explaining the endless amounts of typos I've made (the phone makes stuff up)!

Had to go to the PC to empty inbox, I noticed several messages there that never came through to my app? It's a totally different forum format on the PC, that I'm not familiar with, that combined with my limited attention span caused me frustration..lol.

I spent 8 mths in the Seychelles, I'll see if I can find your thread and respond.

Regarding selling Sukha, I'm easy either way, sort of letting fate decide my future direction, at crossroads which is unusual, I'm generally quite sure of which direction is next , not so at the moment. I'm not good at no direction [emoji16]....1st world problem.

Worst case scenario I spend a extended stay at Chiapas, purchased a big ass deep freeze and aircon today, I intend to be comfortable [emoji1787], only real downside is my crew Dave just ain't that pretty.

Geez, you're certainly not doing poor old Dave any favours

Can I ask what part of Australia you normally reside, and if you do head back where you'll likely end up?

We are very early stage looking at boats again and Sukha looks like an absolute bargain for a serious cruiser.

I'm putting her up for sale at a very aggressive price, I can do this as the Australian dollar has collapsed and works for me when selling in usd. The boat is in such condition she could leave this hour to cross the Pacific, shes fully prepared including stocked with food.

Sukha is advertised at a cheap price to get a quick sale, compare her to other Catalina 470's for sale, she is a good one going cheap...shes not a cheap boat.

PRICE: 145K usd, It makes her the best value Catalina 470 on the market by far. Two others that are almost as cheap have been severely hurricane damaged in the past, Sukha has never had damage.

I wanted a modern design to cruise the world, and I wanted the most bang for my buck C470 worked for me due to the following:

It has a lead keel,* most boats today have cast iron, they dont use cast iron because it's better, they use it because it's cheaper.

All the bulkheads a glassed in where alot of boats today have glued in bulkheads.*

Theres no liners other than the bathrooms therefore you have access to the entire hull if you need to view it to access damage in the event of a bad grounding,* this cant be done in most modern boats or even older ones for different reasons.**

The hull below waterline is 1 inch solid glass, I've had transducers out and measured.*

The keel is mounted to a keel stub, much better design than most. This is also gives you a big bilge, most modern boats dont have that.

The rigging is very strong , 7/16 and 3/8 this includes the chain plates , excellent design, no water can leak in and rot stuff.

Twin wheels have* independent cables ,if one breaks you still have the other wheel.

The rudder lower third is sacrificial in the event of a hard grounding, this protects the rudder giving you enough to steer and get you home.

A very large frame is the backbone of the hull, this is not only immensely strong but is glassed into the boat, not glued like many grid systems are.

Good sea galley, useable.

Collision bulk head upfront and one of the strongest bow roller setups .

The fore foot of the hull isnt quite as flat as other brands, she doesn't slam.

All in all I found her better built than much of the competition.

INVENTORY:

Sukha is the deep draft , standard rig version. I wanted the deep draft as I believe they sail better, so far this has proven to be true, the shallow draft version has 660 lbs more lead to achieve the same stability and I dont like wings.

Yanmar 4JH3-TE has 2,040 hrs on it as of typing. The engine is in perfect condition and burns no oil, starts instantly, these are fantastic engines. Both heat exchangers and turbo reconditioned in Capetown 3 mths ago as part of preventative maintaince. Yanmar mechanic believes engine is in very good condition, Im also a motor mechanic and agree with his assessment.*

The below is in no specific order, I'm typing as stuff comes to mind. She is a fully equipped world cruising boat ready to go.

Mainsail new 2018 Zoom sails (inmast furling).

110% Genoa new June 2017 UK sails.

100% jib new 2016, first used 2018, UK sails.

Code zero on RLG Evo 10 continuous line furler.

Assymetrical spinnaker 2016 in ATN sock (used 2 times).

I deliberately dont have a big genoa, for general cruising i find the better shape jib or 110 a better sail, if its light I use the code zero. I found the genoa was a sail trying to be everything and its not, the smaller headsail combined with code zero is a much better arrangement IMHO. I never use the spinnaker , I find the code zero a much more versatile sail.

Below is in no particular order, im typing as equipment comes to mind.

Icom IC-M802 HF marine radio with pactor modem.

9505a Iridium sat phone with pc data connection kit.

Standard Horizon matrix Vhf radio with ais reciever.

Upgraded ,larger stronger Garhauer traveler (2017).

All running rigging replaced over the last two years, this includes dyneema (spectra) halyards Feb 2019.

New rudder (2019) and bearings 8k.

A large assortment of tools, angle griders, bolt cutters, taps, dies, files, spanners etc all new 2017, i have all thats needed if your going of the grid.*

The only think she needs is a new dinghy, its started to leak.*

Theres lots of other "stuff"like dyneema emergency stays, frictionless rings, ropes ,hand held depth sounder, hot knife for rope cutting etc etc all the stuff you accumulate while living* aboard fulltime.

Cheers Dale*
Sukha

Re: Catalina 470

I sail a sister-ship to Dale's....and my Catalina 470 is great, too!

Although, mine is 2 years older, and I don't have a big inverter nor a code zero, I do have an Autoprop, a Fischer Panda Genset and 3 big air cond uints! And, a Caribe C12 RIB w/ 15-hp Yamaha!
Other than that, we're just about equally equipped, including tools, etc...(but, I suspect I have more electrical and electronics parts, supplies, "fun stuff"...'cuz I'm a electronics nut, ya' know!)

Seriously, I just want to reinforce the positive comments regarding being a great offshore boat!
And, one of the golden gems of the sailboat industry! (yeah, I'm a little biased...but, have a look, you might agree!)

I've sailed mine across the Atlantic a few times (and I've done crossings on other boats too...of various designs), and I can say without a doubt that the Catalina 470 sails like a dream!!
And, is one of the strongest fiberglass / GRP boats I've ever seen....(okay, maybe not quite as sweet as my parent's Hinckley was, but she's 1/4 the cost!)

Upwind in heavy weather (quite a few Full Gales offshore and across the Atlantic)....and even in a steep chop (25-30 kts north wind against Gulf Stream)....and downwind in big seas / heavy weather (TS Olga caught me in the Atlantic in 2007)
She performs like any perfect offshore boat, tracks great, steady, not harsh...and the autopilot keeps here on-course, even running from a tropical storm offshore...
She sails sweet...maneuverable, responsive, fast, etc....BUT...
But, also steady, stout, and firm....and unlike a lot of "modern" boats, with no "pounding", etc...

Dale, has given you all a great look at his boat, and I'm not a naval architect, etc....but, for those that poo-poo fin keels and spade rudders, 'cuz you relate them to flat formed hulls / racing sleds, etc., please have a look at the Catalina 470, you'll see a great hull shape, and a very well designed keel and rudder....and you'll be surprised at how it can be done!!
It tracks well, but still steers/maneuvers like a dream!

Have a look at the underside of my Annie Laurie...she has the 6' draft wing keel...

Here is a sister ship with the 7' 10" draft fin keel....same hull/rudder, etc...just the keel is different...

I think there have been a total of 175 - 180 hulls made of the Catalina 470...one was dragged from anchor (in 90'+ of water) in a tropical storm in central America and stripped clean by locals....and a few were lost on the hard during Hurricane Irma....so, there's only about ~ 175 of these out there sailing the world (a friend is shipping his back from Singapore, due to Covid-19)....

FYI, Dale and I have never met, just friends via email!!
And, in that vein, there is one other big thing you get when buying a Catalina 470....and that's our owners group...

The C470 owners group has about 100 (?) owners, a few principles of some equipment manufactures (one of the founders of Edson, used to be a member, but he's now retired), and a few others....of all walks of life, many of whom have a great deal of sailing experience! Some are engineers, electricians, accountants, bankers, doctors, dentists, plumbers, businessmen, etc....but all love their C470's! And, you're never more than a email away from experienced advice on all sorts of things...

I hope someone steals (opps, buys) Dale's boat....'cuz it's such a great deal, nobody wants it on the market too long... LOL

Fair winds to all

John

Yes, if someone comes up with the money while the Aud is still low (its rising), if it rises much more I cant do that price. I don't need to sell, if she happened to sell then great, if not this works for me to, I've been planning future adventures in my head today.

The Aud was 57 cents to Usd when I originally posted, its 64cents today which is starting to make the asking price a little low for me.

It's funny that many dont recognize value. A guy in Panama that is looking for a boat and has 150k to spend could of got Sukha cheap 4 weeks back when the aud hit 55 cents, yet he seems to think because it has a bolt on keel and inmast furler and isnt 35 years old that its not quality....I didnt try to convince him, his lack of boat knowledge is going to cost him alot more than I'm asking.

As mentioned I'm in Mexico, I'm actually considering heading across the Pacific in 3 weeks time, 7200nm in 2 mths, Sukha is ready to go. Once I get back she has circumnavigated ,which includes 2 Pacific crossing, you cant tell by looking at her.
