Boats available in the Philippines

I am considering buying one of the following boats, listed in no particular order.
Which can be seen at https://www.pgyc.org/sail-boats-for-...p#cruisingsail

Roberts 38
S2
Cacafuego, a 43' (45' sparred length) canoe sterned cutter. She was designed by Chuck
Paine as his version of the popular Valiant 40.

Gulf 32
Irwin Competition 37
Catana 43 (Would be a streach of budget and way more than needed)

Jeanneau Voyage 12.5 / Year 1990 (Listed on this site)

Classic Cheoy Lee 38
Hunter 34
Which of these, in your opinion, would be concidered the best boat for passage making? My plan is to sail, single handed, (no more than 3 aboard) to Texas, U,.S.A. from the Philippines via the Indian and Atlanic Oceans.

Re: Boats available in the Philippines

Pretty much it boils down to the one which will wear you out the least by virtue of performing basic tasks on them. Such as;
- changing sails/reefing
- her motion
- how well the AP/vane keeps her on course
- how much energy it takes to get from your bunk to a good viewpoint to check the horizon 360 deg
- how much energy it takes to get dressed (especially in foulies & warm gear)
- how much you have to go up & down the companionway to cross check your navigation with what you see visually.
- how dry she is; in terms of green water sweeping the decks via large waves, via spray, & via being able to be totally UNDER a dodger/pilothouse while underway.
- on which one is it easiest to have your primary bunk near the companionway stay dry, & draft free.
- which has the least leak prone interior, including deck fittings over bunks
- which is least likely to get pooped, thus partially soaking her interior (despite the washboards being in place)

All of which scream catamaran to me, based on your list. Though of course common wisdom/common fallacy is that a smaller boat takes less work. But this isn't necessarily true if the slightly larger boat is well setup. Especially if she's much more ergonomic based on many/most of the criteriia mentioned above. And that her motion is less extreme, thus making her easier to move around on, get quality rest, & generally feel more at ease.

These comments of course leave out the differences between the various choices in terms of how much effort will need to be put into continuous maintenance, including while at sea. And particularly when it's time for a stint in the yard. Along with, of course, budget(s).
Well thought out, minimalistic systems pay big dividends in this, both at sea, & in the boatyard.

Parrotsailer,
I'm confused as to your comment that people should not single hand a catamaran. Why, I see absolute no reason why you would say this. Please don't tell Francois Gabart who just broke the world record by sailing his trimaran, single handed around world in 42 days averaging approximately 23 knots for the trip. Oh sorry that was a trimaran not a catamaran, silly me. . Are you telling me I should not have been sailing single handed on many occasions for the past four years.

Uncivilised - Surprised that easy to 'lay ahull' or 'hove-to' in heavy weather was not on your list.

If I were you I would also consider looking at boats in Queensland Australia. There will be a much larger range available. The overall trip would still be about the same distance.

Re: Boats available in the Philippines

This is a great list for anyone to consider. Thanks very much for taking the time to post it. I am shopping for a boat now, to sail around the corner and around the world. It is easy to get starry eyed, looking for that dream boat, and forget these basic, but extremely significant, operational factors.

Classic Cheoy Lee 38

Especially if it is a ketch.

Haul it out in Bonbanon at Arlene and Boy and have a repaint of bottom.

Then be sure to replace all hoses and belts, spare set of belts, two spare oil.changes.

Spare water pump.

Never start engine in these seas without checking to see if salt water came in to engine.

clean clean clean fuel

Send sails to Hyde in Mactan for Marlan to overhaul.
