Re: 42'-54' Bluewater Cruiser Monohull - Ready to Buy

Calypso52, that is a wise move. I am likely to follow the same approach unless it is an involved project like rod-to-wire conversion.

Good luck with the sale.

Really? ... sounds like you know very little about economics as well as boats

Re: 42'-54' Bluewater Cruiser Monohull - Ready to Buy

We are pulling the mast this spring on our GS50. We do have Sta-Lok (thanks to the prior owners) which makes things easier. When we pull it we will use the local rigger as well as doing a bunch of the work ourselves.

We are expecting to pay $15k for the haul, bottom paint, a bunch of other work (drop the rudder), pull the mast, change out the 12 year old wire and install a new Schaefer roller furling.

Of course there is always more to do so the cost is likely to go up. And we are a sloop.

I terms of hull color? I have a dark blue hull. I wish it was white for tropical heat issues. But, if the boat is right the hull color can be changed.

I do understand it is better to have the right boat with the right hull color from the start.

(Shameless plug - The old Harken Mk2 will be parted out)

evm1024, good luck with the project. Sounds like a handful, but with a rewarding outcome.

The latest re-mast & re-rigging estimate I got for a 53’ ketch was $54K, and was likely to go up at least $10K more. 3-5 month lead due to the delays in supply chain of the current market. So trying to avoid a major rigging re-fit.

The blue color is something I made circles around. It happens to be my favorite color, but I also owned a blue boat before. A good time to honor the 400 year old quote; fool me once, shame on...

Anybody familiar with a Hallberg Rassy 42E? Quite capable boat for sure. Can it 'comfortably' accommodate 4 adults for an extended period?

Re: 42'-54' Bluewater Cruiser Monohull - Ready to Buy

This boat is beyond your stated budget and in the wrong location. But I have a 1987 Oyster Deck Salon Cutter with newer teak decks, repainted mast (16 yrs ago still looks great). Stored indoors and heated every winter since 2003. Fresh water since 2003 located Lake Michigan. I have owned this boat since 1995. Fresh sails and ready to go anywhere. Dave 262-989-6000 (cell)

54K + 10K=64k for two masts and some wires
Proofs me again to get as small boat as possible for my needs.
reading that I am happy to have a 12m Vilm Ketch were a re-mast and re-rigging will be around 10000Euro, a backstay is 150Euro. Deckstep Mast, easy to pull and most likely you could find a fitting used one in good condition and get this done under 5K. Cost go exponentially up, especially if you pass the 50ft mark. And every boat is 1m too short

Dave, location can be worked with. In fact, I'd fly anywhere for a fresh water boat. Budget is set as defined in the OP.

CaptainRivet, well stated. Mind thoughts exactly. Let's also factor in the marina & storage fees too.
