40' Saltram Saga (long coach roof version) Cruising Cutter

'Ellida of Laira' is a Saltram 40. Formerly called Saga the boats were designed by Alan Pape and based on the canoe-ended (double-ended) design of the Colin Archer. My wife and I bought Ellida in 1997 and spent 3 years fitting her out. She was a wonderful home for us for 13 years having cruised from UK in 2000 to the Americas then through Panama to NZ and Australia before heading to Malaysia where she currently lies. Sadly my wife died and I have no wish to continue without her, so Ellida must be sold.

I had the coachroof and cockpit repainted, fitted a new Furuno radar system and renewed her standing rigging in 2012/13 and she has not sailed since. She was moth-balled after illness struck in 2013 and on my return at the end of September this year it seems that the engine has seized. It's a Yanmar 4JH3E and I am in the process of having her properly reconditioned by qualified engineers, this is expected to take about 4 weeks.

Her condition is excellent both inside and out and it would require very little work to put her back into harness.

Having read the above, members will understand that I am prepared to 'take a hit' on this in order to effect a quick sale. I am asking EUR 40,000. There is a vast amount of kit that goes with this including a virtually unused Honda 2000 generator plus many tools, charts, SSB, RX only AIS, VHF, GPS.

Didn't the author Bruce Bingham own one of these?

I didn't know he had. Such a well know and respected guy, I Googled around a bit but could find the link. It'd be nice to think he had.

Hi, sorry to hear of your loss and not least as you have decided to sell the boat.
Some extra information would be useful such as age and condition of sails, condition of hull and so on and so forth. It is clearly a fine vessel but as it is on t'other side of the world for me, or thereabouts, a much fuller description for me, and no doubt others would undoubtedly help your cause as well as assist interested parties to make a more informed decision. I look forward to further details. With best wishes,
Jeremy

Re: 40' Saltram Saga (long coach roof version) Cruising Cutter

Hi Jeremy,

As requested, a few more details of Ellida of Laira and some very recent (about a week ago) shots of the interior. I should say at the outset however, that very positive interest has been expressed in this sale, one prospective purchaser is flying in to see her in the next few days and there is a reserve list! The exterior is all shrouded in black netting at the moment. I tried tarps and canvas, but the climate is quite severe here and the locals know best, black netting lets the air through and keeps here free from leaves etc.

I bought Ellida as a 'sail away' version from Skentelberys. That included engine fitted, cabin sole, main bulkheads, portlights, full standing rigging and running rigging. The gas and engine electrics were sub-contracted to qualified engineers, I (with help from my wife) did all the woodwork and interior fittings.

Additional specs.
She's a cutter rig, the sails are original but are in sound condition and are stored under cover. I have 2 No. 1 jibs, 1 yankee and a spinnaker, 1 staysail, 1 mainsail and a storm set of stay and tri. The rig is new (English stainless steel) with Norseman fittings. Fitted also with a Monitor wind vane self steering system augmented by a Simrad autopilot.

Nav electronics include, Furuno GPS (brand new) and radar (brand new), Probe forward looking sounder, B&G instruments wind, speed, depth and combo. AIS rx only, SSB (Icomm IC-M710) and Pactor modem.

She has an Echo Marine watermaker which has been in stored state for longer than recommended, a forward and an aft heads both with showers and wash basins.

The hull is undamaged, no osmosis, the paintwork is Awlgrip circa 2003 and looks a little dull at the moment.

I'm running out of steam here... I would leave my nearly new Honda 2000 generator, a Read's sewing machine and various spares and special tools.

Best wishes.,

Graham

I think Binghams saga was his own design, a 35 foot canoe sterned motorsailer that went into production as the fantasia 35 http://sailboatdata.com/viewrecord.asp?class_id=2117

Sorry to hear of your loss.
Sorry you are parting with your loved boat too.

Very nice looking interior on your boat.
I have added one photo and part of your description and a link to this thread, to a thread called "Flush Deck Boats."

That's excellent news that you have so much interest so soon. I genuinely hope you can sell quickly and move on. It would have taken time to get money from savings account so good luck with your prospective buyer[s].
I always think that boats for sale are like buses, if you miss one, there will be another one along in a minute! Best wishes

Hello, we are interested in this cruising yacht. At present we live in northern Brazil and have a property to sell or swap.

The details can be found here: Taiba Property For Sale - Taiba Property For Sale

Perhaps you would be interested in a swap deal with us for a complete lifestyle change. The swap details are on the website. Brazilian property can be legally purchased and owned with just a Brazilian Tax card/number. Many foreigners buy property here like
this for using the property as a holiday home.

I look forward to hearing from you,

Regards

Ian Wickison.

Re: 40' Saltram Saga (long coach roof version) Cruising Cutter

Hi, Ellida was sold in 2017, but to answer your question anyway, the deck was balsa cored fibreglass sandwich and the cabin, also balsa cored on the upper surface but single skin fibreglass on the sides, front and rear.
