Re: Leopard 39 Weight
I believe Gavin LeSueur purchased Topgun specifically for the round Australia race that has been posponed.
It is essentailly a racer rather than a cruiser.
Cheers

Of course it is and I was never suggesting her as an alternative to the leopard or anything similar.

Re: Leopard 39 Weight
Another big difference is the cost of maintenance; everything is bigger and more expensive :-( on a 45/46 footer

If you are likely to provision for long periods without resupply/refuel and are setting up with heavier equiptment such as dive compressor/dive gear you ar starting to look at 3 tonnes plus added and greater waterline will be better.
If only a couple with lighter load then 38/40 foot makes good economics.

No argument. All comes back to where you will be crusing/reprovisioning and what you will carry and be doing. With only 2 people mostly and not carring dive compressor/genset 40ft should be adequate.

Depends
The systems I have on board are the same as I would have on a 40fter
A bit more hull length and a larger anchor are about all that has changed as it is a 40fter, just on longer hulls.
I would imagine that you could take a heavyweight 40ft sailing cat
Build the same from better materials making it lighter or put it on 50ft hulls to get the same weight as the heavyweight 40ft
If it weighs similar, therefore the loads would be similar, you could probably use the same rig section, wire size, winch size etc and expect similar if not better performance to the overweight 40

Good comment. Difficult to find in most production cats.

Re: Leopard 39 Weight
Quick update on this as i have managed to have a bit of a sail on a leopard 39 in some pretty telling conditions - 25 knots with lumpy 2.5m seas.
Was pretty much as the numbers would suggest - pretty average performance. ie 8.5 knots was touched on a beam reach but rest of the time mid to high 7s (we had 1 reef in). Had to backwind the jib to get through the wind in the lumpy seas which would be a pretty big pain one up.
Funnily enough the polars were very optimistic by comparison.
Thanks to all those that contributed here. We are looking for longer and lighter now....

I suspect Dereck Kelsall could change that aspect of his design quite easily.

The sailing version that was made was around the 4700kg mark, 27hp diesels, 28ft wide. http://www.2hulls.com/usedcatamaran-...ipstream1.html
I am 4 feet narrower overall and without a mast, but do have slightly heavier engines, props, shafts and a longer BD panel, so I would like to think around those numbers empty.
Full Disp is approx 8500kg according to the drawings

Even my 50fter isnt this fat on or near the waterline

What else can you get on a longer WLL for the same money?

They do wonders with wide angle lenses.. Yes it's roomy.. But really measures only 57 1/2 inches at the widest point.
