I personally prefer to get out a way from the coastal traffic and fishing grounds. In deep water the wave action is a bit easier on you and the boat and I don't get beat up as much.

As to extremes, I suppose Minaret has a point. It's just something one has to adapt to so it becomes enjoyable.

My remedies for some of the above problems:

Pilot house.
Radar.
Large engine.
Lots of fuel.

Yes, very true. But a 747 is even better if you don't want to just beat your head against those waves and winds....

Well I cry about it but I am out there several times every year. Maybe it will be better this year. If not Beth is going down to my brothers place in Texas. I will leave the lost coast to you Eskimos.
