Cruise north from Miami

We have a ten-day vacation window coming up and wonder about cruising round-trip NORTH from Miami. We draw 5' and are 64' tall. We prefer to anchor out, have a good dink and a generator. Suggested itinerary anyone? Thanks!

Not great cruising areas north of Miami. In fact very few scenic anchorages. Lake Worth, Ft. Pierce come to mind. Are you sailing up outside or doing a ditch job? If you're going up the ditch you'll find an anchorage every night but nothing to write home about until you get to Peck Lake. That area is nice. The next nice spot going north will be Ft. Pierce area. And Vero Beach.

Nothing northward like Biscayne Bay or the Keys.

10 days you could be as far north as Norfolk and back. Savannah, Charleston?

Yeah, the idea would be to enjoy some anchoring and leisure time along the way. We have done the run to Key West (166 statute) comfortably. I don't think we'd care to go much farther than that. That computes to Vero Beach or thereabouts.

St. Augustine is a nice stop..there are no more limits for mooring ball stays at the City Marina and they now have both gas and Diesel...

Re: Cruise north from Miami

Vasco nailed it I think. The destinations from Miami are south (Keys) and east (Bahamas). Heading north, you will find it is a long distance between inlets (Port Everglades, then Lake Worth, then Ft Pierce, then St Augustine), and anchoring out is difficult with prevailing easterlies (NE in the winter, SE in the summer).

If you don't mind making the long jumps between inlets, then you'll find plenty of shelter in the ICW unless there is a cold front.

It's this sage advice that makes us head south trip-after-trip. Even Bimini is alluring but the specter of a shift to prevailing northerlies after we're out there scares us off. We both have to be back to work and leaving the boat out there, airlines to get home and then retrieve her etc. is daunting. Rich

It's not bad, really, dockage is cheap there in the winter (last I was there, around $1 per foot per night). Flights are mostly out of FLL though. Other than marinas, not many places in South Florida or the Bahamas are particularly comfortable after a strong cold front.
