Chesapeake newbie

I am a UK skipper on a 50ft monohull yacht, draft 7 ft, who after coming up from the Caribbean to the Hampton area with the Salty Dawg Rally will be looking for an in water dock (not a buoy) place to leave the yacht for a month whilst we return to the UK.

We do not need lots of facilities, as we are on a cruising budget, just a secure place with reasonable transport links to Washington Dulles.

The period is mid May to Mid June.

Can I please have your recommendations?

Re: Chesapeake newbie

Welcome to the Chesapeake! We used to live in apartments on Back Creek near Annapolis (15 minute walk to downtown). They may have a slip available, you’ll probably need one on the end of the pier based on your size. Dock master can be reached at: (443) 926-1303. Easy to get to DC between a daily commuter bus and the Metro.

If that falls through, PM me and I can provide additional recommendations.

Cheers

Re: Chesapeake newbie

You might try Cobb's Marina and Boatyard in Norfolk on Little Creek.

They may have a slip available by then.

Then there's Bay Point Marina also on Little Creek. They are redoing all their dock's and may be complete and have a large slip available by the time you arrive.

Both are right near the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay in the Hampton Roads area

I am at Cobb's Marina with a 6 foot keel. I can only come and go during high tides.

Calvert Marina at Solomons Island, floating docks, swimming pool, courtesy car, bike riding distance to supermarkets, chandlery etc, monthly rate is $15/ft/mth. Get a one way car hire to the airport - Enterprise Car rental will pick you up at the dock. 2 Hr drive to Dulles international airport.https://www.calvertmarina.com/transient.html

Anchorage Marina in Baltimore. Walking distance to Supermarket, chandlery, Budget car rental etc good security $13 /ft/mth. Car rental one way to BWI airport, or taxi, 20min drive.

We have left our boat at both these places for a month at a time when flying out of the country, no problems at all, staff very helpful.

You must be in a slip close in since they have some slips that are in a depth of 10'-12'

Re: Chesapeake newbie

Dulles Airport is not close to any place on the Bay. it is 110 miles from Norfolk to Annapolis, another 40 to Baltimore. Solomons is 1/2 way. Annapolis will give you more car rental options, but a slip will be expensive.
If you are new to the Bay, be mindful of the lack of depth. The good news is that the bottom is mud.

I am all the way at the end, all boats with 6 foot keels on my dock while in their slips are grounded at low water.

I know they quote that 10-12 foot depth, but with the shifting sands this winter, things have changed.

On a friends boat two Sundays ago, we were grounded mid channel for 4+ hours.

On the Eastern most dock closes to the base? Maybe that's A dock...

Re: Chesapeake newbie

Plus one for Calvert Marina on Solomons Island. We spent quite a bit of time there in the Chesapeake in 2016/17 on a UK Southerly 42 and found it was half the price of some marinas in Annapolis and very friendly. Good engineers on site too if you need them. Good luck.
