Cairns to Port Moresby

How many of you have done this passage?
Any good anchorages on the way?
Any advice?
Thanks

Re: Cairns to Port Moresby

I've done it quite a few times

Once you clear out of Cairns, you are not supposed to anchor anywhere (and the area is heavily patrolled by BF boat and aircraft - both of which are likely to hail you and get you to confirm your details.)

The easiest way to do it is inside the reef to 2 Mile Opening (150NM) and then 320NM straight across the Coral Sea.
It's probably best to aim to make the Opening in daylight on an outgoing tide.

That's a very valid point. My thoughts were exactly what you said, to make the opening in daylight, I wasn't sure if there was a reef nearby or if you were allowed to anchor near a reef once you've left Cairns. You don't know anyone interested in making the passage?

There are lots of islands and reefs all the way up to 2 Mile Opening.
You will be skirting quite a few if you take that route.

Re: Cairns to Port Moresby

One cannot anchor at all for a span of 150NM? That’s spectacular cruising ground.

Can one clear customs in the Louisades these days?

Re: Cairns to Port Moresby

SE trades tend to be a bit erratic at that time of year anyway and Thursday Island is a port of entry so you should be able to clear out from there. It might be worth while to have a look at the pilot charts to see how common NW winds are at that time of year with a view to coastal cruising to TI then easting from there to Port Moresby.

Not legally if you have cleared out in Cairns.

The only currently authorised Ports of Entry (specified in "Covid Measure 2") are: Port Moresby, Lae, Madang, Rabaul, Kimbe.
