Best Queensland cruising guide

Hi all.
We intend to sail up to QLD from Port Nelson around April this year. We have two dogs with us and would love to hear from you all which cruising guides for QLD including the many outer reef islands and atolls you would suggest.
Many thanks

Fair winds
Ralph

Re: Best Queensland cruising guide

vk4hr the cruising guide by Alan Lucas is fairly comprehensive. Lots of areas might be out of bounds for your dogs.
Cheers

@vk4hr:

If you're coming from the Port Nelson in West Australia, you must be aware of the croc/dog food issue. Have a safe journey.

Sounds like it might be a challenge with the dogs. Thanks

Is there an alternative for the dogs ?
Much of Qld coast is national park ie NO dogs. We were on Lady Musgrave a few years back and the rangers flew out in a helicopter to fine some cruisers who had their dog on the beach.

At a min imum Lucas and Beacon to Beacon, but the other two are invaluable if you spend any time around the islands

Re: Best Queensland cruising guide

Lucas hands down if you want just one comprehensive guide.

You will have trouble with dogs on the offshore islands and cays - virtually all ban dogs and are patrolled. But most mainland stops will be fine.

Teach your dogs, if not already, to go ones and twos on the boat. We have a catamaran and dogs use the trampolines with no problems. On a monohull probably a square of fake grass on a tray. That way you can visit places where dogs aren’t allowed without risking taking them ashore.

Teach them to swim for fun and exercise so you don’t have to go ashore for walks. If you’re fast enough then swim with them (watch out if they try to climb onto you!), otherwise have them follow you on a SUP or in a kayak.

Thank you for that, much easier to anticipate your route.

If this is your first trip, just the Lucas should see you through. Beacon to Beacon is really for little motorboats who don't run aground in depths where you can see the bottom. Our boat draws 2.2 m. and so we like to see actual depths posted. Beacon to beacon does not show a 3 m. line.

If vk4hr is your ham radio call sign, let me share that my husband Jim's is vk4gft. There is a little ham radio net for cruising yachties, more details available on request.

Do be aware, crocs are around from Bribie Is. (Moreton Bay) northwards. It is a safety issue for the dogs, perhaps more attractive prey to crocs than humans, and salt water crocs can stay submerged for 2 hrs., so easy to not-see them.

Ann

My Labradoodle now identifies as a Dingo, so he should be allowed in National Parks.

Thanks for th tips Ann, and yes it is my call. I am familiar with that net.
Looks like more planning needed than suspected , given the pups
