Re: Best Place to Live Board on $1M USD?

Fishy,

I would suggest you rephrase your question to “overseas cruising base on $4k a month...the $1m raises too many other questions.....and there are several threads with people’s first hand expenses month to month....

+1 for Cuba. Havana is a World Heritage Site so there's lots to do. There's no crime. It's close to the US. I was there for a week in 2002.

Re: Best Place to Live Board on $1M USD?

Have you ever heard of the Law of Supply and Demand?

One of the things that invariably happen when a low cost, reasonable cost of living locale gets ďdiscoveredĒ it fills with tons of noveau arrivistes wanting what had been possible with only a small influx of wealthy (by local standards) ex-pats. Pretty soon itís McDonalds on street corners and prices inflated to developed world levels.

Hire a retirement consultant and put some of those million bucks to
good use.

Re: Best Place to Live Board on $1M USD?

You have a boat, the point of having a boat is you can move and travel. With your budget you can do a mix of anchoring and marina stays nearly anywhere there are sailboats. Start moving until you find a spot you really like, stay a while until you don't like it, then move again. I have friends that have sailed from canada to panama. They stayed 6 months to a year in some spots and they have no desire to circumnavigate. Start cruising and do so at your leisure....

On a side note, I hate OPs using "what's the BEST" of anything. The best is subjective. There is a lot of serviceable that is completely acceptable, durable and should be praised.

Re: Best Place to Live Board on $1M USD?

I'd agree that stretching $1M for 40 years in anywhere approaching western prices is a big ask.

Sorry I can't comment on the western hemisphere but this would be very achievable in many countries throughout Asia. Cheap flights for your daughter and door to door it's not that much more time to get there.

Thailand probably has the most to see and do and the most established cruising community. Philippines has the friendliest visa policies. Indonesia and Malaysia if you want to get off the beaten track.

Good luck.

West coast of Mexico, like La Paz or Puerto Vallarata. Easy cruising, good cheap food, easy provisioning, decent health care, many other expat cruisers, easy access to US. Downside might be planning for summer hurricane season.

Providencia is a nice stopover on your way from Cartagena to the Honduras Bay Islands, from which the Rio Dulce is easily accessible. When it's not hurricane season, Isla Mujeres and Cozumel, Mexico, are great hangs.
I'd be inclined to go back and forth between those places until maybe one tickled my fancy so much that I swallowed the anchor and bought a thatched cottage near the beach.

I am sincerely grateful for a genuine response- THANK YOU! Iím just curious as to others experiences- not looking for snarky comments. Has anyone lived aboard in Costa Rica, or Belize? looks to fit the bill....
Belize has lovely cruising, though it seems to go through phases of sketchy security. The caribbean side of Costa Rica is very small; the Pacific side IMO is completely unsuitable for living aboard long-term: marinas are expensive (they cater to sportfishers); groceries also, and with very little variety; the climate is excessively humid; the anchorages that aren't rolly are plagued with petty theft which the police won't prosecute. You're better off in pacific Panama, where things are cheaper and more varied, even if the humidity is the same.

Maybe you could live on the Seine in Paris for a change of scenery. How Ďbout the Thames in London? Venice?
Since the OP appears to be from the USA, I presume, he's also got a Decent Social Security check coming once he's in his 60's, so that should generate somewhere around $80k/yr combined.

It's a little hassle getting the long term visa but living on the Seine in Paris would be quite possible. Assuming the boat is suitable, if he can get a slot in the Arsenal basin it's only around 6000euro per year. Then there is the option to take trips out into the canal systems if he wants some time out of the city.

Really if the OP isn't stupid with money (unlikely if he's saved up a million), he can live most anywhere.

It's really more about what is he looking to do and what level of lifestyle he expects.

Palma de Mallorca would be my choice. Lovely island, hot summer and a mild winter with great food and wine at about 60% less than the US.

Benz said what I was going to say. I could add that medical care is excellent in Panama. Western Carribean for sure. For years. Easy peasy. You can also get residency in Panama and that has a lot of advantages.

And re Cuba; why not? Great place great people for a visit. Long term I would choose the western Carrier and especially Panama.

Vacationing in Cuba on number of occasions, Havana last year.
Beautiful country, safe, friendly ppl; socialistic experiment creating rundown economy robbing ppl of hope for better future. I could live there in a heartbeat, but I've spent half of my life in the same geopolitical realities, making me feel at home there.
With the purse of that size you'd live in luxury, which for me would be a moral dilemma.

Re: Best Place to Live Board on $1M USD?

Given where you are starting from, go sail the Bahamas and the Caribbean until you find somewhere you like - or keep sailing. There are a lot of wonderful places in this world. If you are careful there is no reason you can't do it on $54k a year. Heck, I'm living in western Canada (cost of living the same or more than in much of the US), sailing in the summers and living on the hard in a wonderful boat yard in the winter - with a car and everything - for much less than that.

You've got me confused. Where does the 54k a year come from? Since you already have the boat and a mil in the bank, it seems to me, that properly invested in rental property, you'd be looking at closer to 100k a year so your options would be fairly broad - maybe not Monaco or the French Riviera but still a lot of places. If you're thinking about the Caribbean, don't forget your annual move out of the hurricane zone - closer to Grenada would be better

Sofa King Fishy,
You have gotten some good advice and input. Just ignore the noise that always comes from a few on the fringe. I may be trying to do the same thing as your desire in a few years. Lots of options.
