Weather routing service for Pacific Crossing
Can anyone suggest a good, reasonably priced, weather routing service? We will be departing San Diego for the marquesas.
We have an iridium Sat phone with SPS mail service. We are still trying to figure out the best GRIB reading software as well.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you!

Weather routing service for Pacific Crossing
I did this passage last year and requested GRIB files via Saildocs using our Iridium Extreme Satphone. There are a large number of GRIBS & other forecasts available and the file size is small. Have a look at the Saildocs website which has a link on it which will tell you about the process of obtaining these files. It is a free service.
I then imported the GRIB files into iNavx on my iPad and also into Viewfax which I run on my Windows Laptop.
Hope this helps.

I would agree with the sail docs advise, there are many ways to obtain gribs but sail docs make it very easy and the other weather products are valuable as well. As for a weather router it is really not necessary, perhaps hire Bob Mcdavitt when you are ready to exit the tropics in October or November.

But by the time you get that far you will have gained enough confidence that it will be unnecessary as well.

You may consider Weather4D PRO on iPad. Weather forecast and routing module, allows to get GRIB files with your satphone via an Iridium AxcessPoint wifi router. Many sailors had still cross Pacific from Panama to French Polynesia with the help of that app.

Or SailGrib WR on Android.
Review here: SailGrib WR weather routing and Android – Android Marine
(By a non-native English speaker, but it's a lot better than my French )

Re: Weather routing service for Pacific Crossing
G'day, Mate. Bob McDavitt also provides a FREE weekly weathergram that you can subscribe to or use this link to get the latest weekly one:
WEATHERGRAM
I have found Bob to reasonably spot on over the 16 years that I have been down this way.
All the best with your planned passage. Cheers

Re: Weather routing service for Pacific Crossing
Yes, indeed, but Weather4D PRO provides greater number of weather forecast models, an Iridium satellite passage prediction tool really amazing and money saving, and an incredible graphic rendering. The top-of-the-art.

A free weather router... but do I get what I pay for?
Is this a genuine offer?
If so, I'd like to more about your err... capabilities.
I'm currently considering a few options. Bob McDavitt is long heralded as the man for the job, and never seems to be able to retire.

Re: Weather routing service for Pacific Crossing
I use high quality data and software.
Its an offer for the serious sailor who may not have those resources.

Re: Weather routing service for Pacific Crossing
All good... the concept of a weather router means different things to different people.
Im more interested in tapping into someones detailed knowledge of meteorology and oceanography and their ability to apply that to my own unique vessel / crew / etc...
I can download gribs, read weather faxes, and use routing software, but there are many more experienced than me who can provide a better interpretation.
Having said that, its certainly a nice offer for the times & places where getting the data is cumbersome or impossible.
