Storm in W Europe
A severe storm is forecast over W Europe, the map in UK Met Office site is almost completely red: Shipping forecast - Met Office
Tonight forecast for Biscay is:
Gale warning - Issued: 1554 UTC on Thursday 2 February 2017
Southwesterly severe gale force 9 decreasing gale force 8 soon then increasing violent storm force 11 later
Wind: Cyclonic, mainly west gale 8 to storm 10, occasionally violent storm 11, perhaps hurricane force 12 later.
Sea state: High or very high.
Weather: Rain or showers.
Visibility: Poor.
The waverider buoy at Pierres Noires, just W of Brittany, measured 10.4m significant height and 14.9m (almost 50ft) max height today at 21:00 local time: CANDHIS - Campagne
I have a thought for those that are at sea now.

Re: Storm in W Europe
It passed on Açores where they predicted 15 to 20 meter waves and 55/60K sustained winds, but it turned out not so bad. It is hitting now continental Portugal, but again, not as bad as the previsions. However almost all the ports are closed and was issued a red alert for the coast.

It seems people in La Rochelle will have a bad night. I hope it will not be as bad as Xynthia in 2010.

Seems to have gone through now, but was a tad windy at tea time. The dogs ears were flapping about when he went outside in the garden. Thankfully the genoa is snug in the forward cabin and not on the furling.

Ho, hum. That's a pretty ordinary winter storm for these latitudes. Remember the Force 12 we had last year?
What was the direction? I'm not on the boat, which is in Cowes at the moment. She's moored to a pontoon to her NE, so a Nor'easter won't be a big problem, but for a bad Wester like the one we had last year, I would want to have lines taken to the pontoon opposite.

Re: Storm in W Europe
Wind went West as it picked up, but whilst windy it was gusts rather than sustained blasts. I think she will be safe in the Cowes YH with the hill behind the high street to deflect the gusts.

Re: Storm in W Europe
It is not every day that you can find +70kts gusts in the grib viewer!
I hope none of the VG boats will be there then.
The thing that hits the fan will pass exactly over the Vizcaya shelf. Just imagine the sea state then. Pure HELL.
Yukie.
