PredictWind on the Chesapeake?

Good morning!

Is anyone using PredictWind on the bay?
If so, have you found any one of the forecast models to be more "accurate" than the others?

As always, thanks for the help!

Regards,

I use Windy and find it reasonably accurate and worth the price (free).

I use it. No model is always right. If you get 2 models to agree, go with it.

if I were going to generalize, I would say stay away from the Euro model on the Bay.

Re: PredictWind on the Chesapeake?

I have been using Windy.com here in Mexico and find it pretty darn good. One thing is that it seems to miss some local shoreline thermal flows. For example in Banderas Bay there is a thermal onshore flow every afternoon which can be quite strong on warm sunny days, and these just don't seem to show on Windy. Otherwise good predictions. Might get similar results in Chesapeake bay, but I don't know the local conditions there and if thermal flows are a big factor.

Re: PredictWind on the Chesapeake?

Thanks folks - appreciate the feedback.

Thanks TheOffice; what actually prompted my question was how vastly different two models were for the same day. One was showing 23kts and had me tacking like crazy and the other showed 12kts on a lovely reach - talk about covering all the bases!

And while yes, the 23kts was the odd forecast, I didn't want to simply discount it.

Anyway, thanks again!

regards,

Re: PredictWind on the Chesapeake?

Try windfinder.com in superforecast mode. In addition to wind, it includes tide information and a pretty reliable overall weather forecast.

Hi,
Have been using predict wind for the last few months,
For forecasting in Bass strait,Aus reasonably happy with it though I find the gusts forecast seems to be the average actual wind speed,(have been caught out a couple of times)
I generally follow the European model,
Also like windy.com to have a good visual
And bouye weather for ease of their app
Cheers

Re: PredictWind on the Chesapeake?

FWIW, I’ve been using Windy for past 2 yrs around Annapolis & have found it to be pretty accurate. I wish I could get more detailed information for very localized locations during races but then who doesn’t?
