Oceanic Weather

Who is up to speed with some relatively low-cost, simple to operate, weather charting programme/service/dingus?

The requirement is for oceanic weather.

I have an Icom HF radio, if that helps.

Cheers
Dpex.

Use the custom Google search function in my signature link to search for GRIB and "Weather Fax". You'll come up with a fair amount of info from past threads to get you started on the subject.

Hud, has pointed you in the right direction (grib and weather fax).

Since you have the radio let me narrow that down a bit further - if you can do e-mail with that radio look at saildocs and viewfax, combined they give you all the weather you could want for free. And you should have them anyway for planning a departure when you have shore internet (cyber cafe).

If you can't/don't do e-mail aboard then Mscan or Jvcom weatherfax are the answer for you.

Also almost every passage has a specific HF net you should listen to, as the most accurate weather info you will ever get is from a boat 200 miles up weather from you reporting his actual conditions.

Has anyone put together a "master" listing of all the HF net frequencies and times?

Where's your area of interest? Most of the lists are regional. Here's one for the Caribbean, published by Caribbean Compass magazine.

Thanks Hud! No particular geographic area- just a general interest in knowing where this sort of reference material lies.

US govt gives full listing of radiofax stations and timetables as a pdf file here:

http://www.nws.noaa.gov/om/marine/rfax.pdf

With an SSB radio already in place you can invest into a modem and get e-mails (thus: radiofax and gribs) easily. The modem is not very cheap though.
