Remember 04 very well. "Breathless" was brand new, just commissioned in Charleston. Went to Jacksonville, thought it was safe. Then came Bonnie, Charley, Frances etc., etc.

Re: Hurricane Season 2011 a Bust

Um, actually, 2011 has been a particularly active Atlantic hurricane season. The average is 9 or 10 named storms and so far, we've had twice that many -- 17.

The forecasters were dead on.

1 east coast tropical storm, and a couple of small storms in the Atlantic is nothing like 2005, or 1811.
Well, it has to do with how the forecast is generated. Reading into the subject explains a lot.

Still, +1, as it is at least the third time we have had alarming forecasts from weather agencies and less than average activity followed.

Re: Hurricane Season 2011 a Bust

BUT, it was a MORE active Atlantic season than the historical average, not less. The OP is in error.

It may have been, or else our instruments are better today and we can detect more?

BTW it was or it was not, do you remember the near panic tone of how the reports were presented? Maybe not all, but definitely some of them.

Or else we can see it this way: because of the AMOUNT of activity, the more activity, the less likely a single event to develop into the real bad thing? (IMHO NOT).

There is the data, there is the report, there are the interpretations.
