Hurricane Harvey Slamming Texas

Our prayers for everyone in and around Corpus Christi Texas as they will be getting slammed by a category 3 hurricane “Harvey” with winds ranging from 111 to 130 mph.

Landfall will be Saturday, August 26th

They will be getting 35 inches of rain.

Then, unbelievably it will circle around back out into the ocean and then slam into Texas a 2nd time as a category 2 hurricane.

Harvey is acting weird. That's not good. It's slow moving and the idea of this thing going back out into the gulf and reforming, after it's kicked the snot out of Texas, is a real possibility from what I am looking at and hearing.

Just the direction it came from and the way it formed is kind of unusual, to say the very least.

The people in it's path are really in for it and I feel for them.

Our Prayers and thoughts are with everyone along the TEXAS coast.

We have very good sailor friends in, Ingleside By the Sea, a short ride across the water from Corpus Christi. They live on the water and their sailboat is in a marina behind their home. The house is raised and might be above the surge, but the boat is apparently in serious trouble. They are projected, as of this post, to be in the cross hairs, at the landfall of the eye. Hoping for a modification on the track of Harvey. Bill and Elizabeth our Prayers are with you. We understand that you have headed for San Antonio.

louisiana has called a state of emergency already.

Yep, this is going to get interesting real quick. We stopped a few days ago in Freeport on the way back to Rockport. Might be a while before my boat gets home.

I was down at Seabrook marina yesterday evening putting additional spring lines etc. on Cavalier and removing all canvasses/windage - there was a surprising lack of activity down at the dock. Many of the bigger sports-fishers were still bobbing about with nothing more than a simple bow and stern line holding them, as though preparing for a lazy/calm Sunday afternoon!

I hope everyone down in the PortA and Corpus marinas managed to get everything ship-shape before retreating inland.

Thoughts go out to our neighbors just to the south.

Before I lived on the Gulf, I thought almost all Atlantic hurricanes originated as tropical waves off West Africa; but almost all of the tropical cyclones I've seen here on the Florida Gulf Coast in the past four years have been spawned by the warm, shallow waters of the Gulf. Harvey did originate as a tropical wave off Africa, but was reduced to remnants until intensifying anew in the Bay of Campeche, which seems to be an especially potent storm incubator.

No kidding!! there were very few of us in Watergate who prepared anything at all!! There's a smaller IP down the dock from me that even has about two feet of their headsail unfurled and pulled tight by the sheets!!

We added extra breast and spring lines, dropped the headsail and bimini. Pulled the boat off the dock by a line across the slip, etc....

All this means is that we'll get 20 knot winds and 24" of rain.

Where in the world did you get that photo from? Was it photoshopped? Hard to imagine that a boat, impaled by a piling would actually stay there through a storm.

That is the real deal right their.

Hurricane Storm surge is the biggest killer and does the most damage.

those 90 degree concrete sea walls are one of the boat and marina killing issues. the rebounding seas become larger and deadlier than the incoming ones. we saw that in cabo blanco marina in barra de navidad with patricia-- the only in water damage besides the beached cargo ship was in there where the rebounding swells tossed boats into condos and yards of condos. we were fine in isla navidad, the cane hole marina.

I kind of wonder what would you do if you happen to be sailing, or living on a boat in a location of a predicted hurricane path?

Do you have enough time to get the f out? Or your best option is to batten down the hatches and get out to stay with friends or in a hotel far from the storms path? And leave most of your belongings behind.

Serious question, what would be the best / safest thing to do? I guess how protected your marina or mooring will play a difference, but only to an extend. Heading out for open water is probably not a wisest thing.
