CYGNSS Surface Wind Speed Satellites

I just read this article: NASA launches tiny satellites to measure hurricane winds - CNN.com

Looks like future wind speed information and predictions may be able to be more accurate and up-to-date. I just wonder if the technology will only be used to track hurricanes as the name implies, or if general surface wind speeds will be shared with weather bureaus.
