Sailing around PNG, thunderstorms can frequently pose a threat. Early warning would be useful.

re: TALOS Giveaway - EXTENDED TO SEPT. 7, 2020!

Crossing the Sea of Cortez singlehanded one night there was a lot of lightning, mostly cloud to cloud, but a few struck the water - not conducive for sleep. If the Talos works as advertized it'd be nice to have that early warning esp. knowing the direction it's going.

re: TALOS Giveaway - EXTENDED TO SEPT. 7, 2020!

Hi All, thanks to Talos for their support!

I am just not sure how useful this device would be. Surely you do not need a device to tell you there is lightning in the area?

Ok, so know you know there is lightning around as some of you have said, it will give you time to prepare. Do you cant outrun or sail away from the storm.

How exactly would you prepare for a strike?
I am not sure turning everything off will help, in fact I know it wont. Unplugging everything could help a lot, but this would be very hard with flush mounted equipment.
Do you go dead ship and shut down everything. Turn of all circuit breakers?
A friend got hit and it fried everything!
Do most modern yachts have surge and lightning protection build in?
Sorry if I am repeating a question, but I just skimmed through the thread!

Love to hear your thoughts!

Here in NC thunderstorms are a regular thing in the summer. Never been hit by lighting, but have come close. Anything that would help with avoidance would be a big help.

Interesting safety equipment. I believe it would be a very valuable addition on our vessel.

Interesting product. I can see this being useful during the day when you sometimes cannot see the lightning in squalls.

re: TALOS Giveaway - EXTENDED TO SEPT. 7, 2020!

Lost all the electronics on my last boat without a direct hit. Even a proximity hit can be bad and direct fatal so I would like to have a warning. On the Hudson River here we get lightening often and in Florida where I'm headed it's even more so. Sign me up. Thanks for letting us know.

Enough to make me run for cover if it showed lightning getting closer. Good safety feature for August afternoons.

Useful to know if lightning was in the area but some further enhancements to come might be helpful as to what actions to take, disconnecting some electronic sources and not others possibly. An ancillary booklet provided with the device on how to set up to best protect a boat electronics/Rig from a lightening strike.

I was about a half mile from a transmission line that got hit by lightning. It nearly broke my eardrum and I nearly needed a change of clothing. Not pleasant.
