re: TALOS Giveaway - EXTENDED TO SEPT. 7, 2020!

We live in Florida and a few years ago, our trawler was struck by lightening. Our 30' VHF antenna was blown to toothpicks and all of our electronics were shot. It literally blew our SSB off the wall.

This is super cool. I have used similar instruments in airplanes before, but I love the idea of having one on my Pearson. More information is always better than less information.

Florida is the capitol of lightning, and we sail in it often. The TALOS Lightning detector could make a big difference to get off the water in time.

I have been hit three times on my different sailboats. One hit fried everything electronic. The other two tripped breakers. I was also hit once in a car. Hit the metal antenna and fried the radio. I guess I could use some help.

re: TALOS Giveaway - EXTENDED TO SEPT. 7, 2020!

We will probably purchase a TALOS next year for use on our trawler.

We are currently on the Great Loop and are in KY waiting for COVID to stabilize but saying that, the TALOS would come in handy letting us know that a lightning storm is approaching.

Due to some current work being done, adding solar and a few other acquirements we are dock bound but with an open roof at the dock, the knowledge of an approaching storm is helpful.

I will also be glad to have the TALOS when we are anchoring.

Our highest point is our VHF antenna and having a warning so it can be lowered could save us considerable expense if it were hit by lightning. The ripple effect thru our 12V systems would be devastating.

Thanks for the opportunity to win and get a valuable product to help us stay safe on our boat.

Best regards.

Stay safe & healthy out there.

As a new and learning cruiser, I thankfully don't have experience with lightning on the water. As a midwestern farm girl I have a healthy respect for the electrical power of lighting. I am really excited about this product and will be adding it to our equipment list for my husband and I to review. Thanks for this opportunity.

I see how useful it might be if you’re able to change course and avoid a storm.

Interesting. Lightning is definitely nor good. A friend's mast was struck years ago. Fried all the electronics on the boat and no on could hear for a few hours.

re: TALOS Giveaway - EXTENDED TO SEPT. 7, 2020!

I would really like to win this product.
Here is Alberta we are experiencing quite a few great lightning shows this summer which are nice to watch from our covered deck. our 15 year old farm dog hates it though!
However once i launch next summer this would be a great bit of kit to have onboard any boat, I might as well try to win this one!
its not expensive so i should buy one anyway if for some silly reason i do not win one of these two.

re: TALOS Giveaway - EXTENDED TO SEPT. 7, 2020!

We have been struck three times on Lake Michigan. The last one was a whopper. We were once fishing on a charter, also on Lake Michigan when sparks started dancing in the fishing rod guides. That storm was still 25 miles away. We are now living aboard in the eastern Caribbean where electric storms are not so common in cruise season. This causes one to let the guard down. This would be nice to give miles away warning with plenty of time to shut down and secure electronics.

re: TALOS Giveaway - EXTENDED TO SEPT. 7, 2020!

I was in a building once when it was struck by lightning. Loudest thing I've ever heard in my life! No damage except the complete loss of the bowl of cereal I was carrying that I through across the room.

With a Talos Lightning Detector I might at least have known it was coming!

re: TALOS Giveaway - EXTENDED TO SEPT. 7, 2020!

We've taken 2 lightning hits on our boat in the last 12 years. Having a unit like the Talos could help decide when to head in to port (or stay in) and get off the boat. If offshore, it could help decide when to put some essential portable electronics in the oven for safekeeping (for Farraday cage effect) and start the engine.

Why start the engine? When we were struck, the engine starting circuits and alternator were blown, even though they were not in use. A diesel doesn't need electricity to run, but starting is another matter.
