Remote Anchor Alarm App --------•+)

Boat Monitor is the best way to stay informed about your boat's movements when leaving your boat in an unfamiliar anchorage, moorage or dock. You can monitor your boat's position from onshore using any smartphone, tablet or computer with internet. You can set a customizable safe zone (geo-fence) based on the amount of rode, depth, etc. If you want to be notified of wind or current changes you can exclude a piece of the pie.

If your boat drifts outside of the green area an alarm sounds, or you can receive an email notification when this happens.

It requires a smartphone/tablet/computer with internet (wi-fi or cell data) that can be left on the boat. It works on Apple and Android GPS-enabled smartphones & tablets, and will even work with many onboard computers connected to a GPS.

Boat Monitor is also a web application, so you can sign up and try it out for free. If you like it, the app costs only $5 in the app store and Android market (look up 'boat monitor').

The question is whether or not you can hook up the mobile device running this application to your boat's stereo system so that you can actually hear the alarm when you are asleep. The anchor drag alarm on my Garmin GPS is way too soft to be practical.

It depends on what inputs your boat's stereo has. Most smartphones have a headphone jack, which can be used with a patch cable to the line-in jack on your stereo, or with an adapter cable to auxiliary-in RCA jacks. Some newer stereos even have Bluetooth in, so you can send your phone audio over BT.

As far as I know EPIRBS only make contact with search and rescue and other services which we can't access. We have discussed setting our system up to work with the Spot system and other devices of that type. This would be more for long-range tracking than for anchor alarm functionality.

Boat Monitor works over the internet, and is accessed via a phone data plan or WIFI, depending on what equipment you use and how it is set up.

We're now working on a version that functions fully offline (no internet), and will feature voice output of your boat's distance and bearing to the spot you dropped anchor. This is handy when you don't want to fully wake up and look at the screen, but the real benefit comes when used with a radio (GMRS/FRS, VHF, etc.) that has a voice-operated (VOX) mode. In short, you can be notified of a drifting boat when ashore, even when hundreds of miles from the nearest internet access.
