Post the Worst "For Sale" Picture You've Seen.

The other day I found an interesting thread on Cruisers Forum that was started by Seahag http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/...oat-96641.html.

He said the following and I only focus on his comments about pictures now.

Quote:

I base this conclusion question on the following:

Pictures-basically, I'm done looking after about the 10th picture. If you haven't got me somewhat interested by about the fifth, I'm gone. Here's why you lost me, even though I do want your boat:
-How old was the monkey who took the pictures?
-Was it really just too hard for you to move the crap out of the boat?
-Do you think I need 50 detail shots of every winch, shackle, gauge, etc.? How many shots of your dirty engine do I need?
-Did you think all that detail would help when you never showed a view of the cockpit, or an overall of the galley, or some of the interior is just omitted?
-Much worse than too many pics: too few--and here I have to ask if Europeans don't either know how to take pictures, or just don't care to see the boat before travelling to look at it? How can you show 5, 3, or in many cases, zero pictures? Duh.
Seahag is right. It is so frustrating not being able to get a clear image of a boat that is for sale. Here are a few tips of Bouwe Bekking that help you to take better pictures for your advert when you are selling your boat.

To get an idea of how not to do it I'm daring you to post the most shocking 'For Sale' pictures you came across on the internet.

Re: Post the worst 'For Sale' picture you've seen.

I have shared this a few times.......

In regard to the comment of "too many pictures" - I both agree and disagree!

Always a challenge when presenting information between providing everything and not swamping the reader / viewer and therefore losing the message. The answer is often to present info in a "pyramid" - where viewer starts at the top and moves deeper if interested (and moves on if not).....in the case of boat listing photos I would say divide the photos into 3:-

1) Start off with one photo! (next to a description of the basics) so that someone can quickly see (as well as read) that it is a 32 foot ketch family cruiser rather than the 35 foot go fast sloop they are after (even when they don't know what an XYZ 32 and / or an ABC 35 actually is) and can then quickly move on....but if still interested they will want more photos........

2) Then onto around 10 photos - of the the usual things folks want to see (Cockpit, Saloon, Galley etc) to get some context of what the boat is about........and if still interested.........

3) and finally the collection of everything that a serious (and fussy? / sensible?!) buyer would possibly want to see before viewing the boat, especially before travelling great distance......and that includes the photos of dull stuff!

My feeling is that if anyone is really interested they would make the effort (lol!) to go to step 3 - but step 2 is the stuff of which daydreams are made of (even for those who have viewed the complete collection)....so no point in drowning those in close up pics of deck or mast fittings for when a buyer is busy selling the boat to themselves!

That is literally a very crappy one

Personally I like seeing a lot of pictures of a boat I like, because usually you cannot get enough. However, too much details are not interesting or pictures of very bad electrical wiring for instance is really putting me off.

Using my example above, I would say levels 1 & 2 (of the Pyramid) are firmly in the realms of selling and putting boat in the best possible light .

Level 3 is more about the nuts & bolts (including the "imperfections" ) not simply about honesty for a Buyer (blah, blah, blah ) but also (primarily?!) to save time for the Vendor / Broker by not leaving disclosure of stuff that will be seen as problems that are as plain as the nose on yer face until later on in a deal as a "surprise" . (i.e. after half a dozen phone calls / e-mails and a boat viewing trip).......don't mean that everyone who sees the known "imperfections" and "challenges" in the flesh will buy (despite having been "forewarned" in the photos - as some folks won't understand what they are looking at, but that not the same as a birds nest of wiring coming as a complete effing surprise!)..........but early disclosure (by photo) would cut down on the numbers of bitterly dissapointed buyers angry at being conned into wasting their time and money (aka Timewasters ).............Of course the trade off is that lose the hands on opportunity to use "super salesman" skills to persuade a buyer that what they can see is not a great problem - despite what a surveyor would later say.........IMO the question really comes down to how much of own time does a Vendor / broker want to waste?

Re: Post the worst 'For Sale' picture you've seen.

This was one of the first boats we looked at. In fact I flew from Sydney to Brisbane return to look at this thing.

Oh My what a dump that was.

It was a John Pugh design.

If I had seen a photo of this I would have saved the airfares and hostel costs.

Re: Post the worst 'For Sale' picture you've seen.

Here is another, fortunately it was in Sydney, the guy had been paying to keep this in a rent a Storage yard in the west of Sydney.

Call the scrap metal dealers before it totally disappears.

Funny how they portray the vessel as needing just a bit of work

Re: Post the worst 'For Sale' picture you've seen.

Here is some "Osmosis" in a Nicholson 34.

Luckily I was sent this image so avoided the 650km each way trip to look at it

We looked at 54 vessels before we bought the Adams 35. It was not pretty either at first sight.
3 x trips to Brisbane
1 x trip to Yamba
2 x Trips to Melbourne
Dozens of trips to Sydney
Almost flew to Perth

Well travelled.

Guys, are these seriously pictures you have seen in 'For Sale' ads, or are you all just trolling?
