Hello Sailors! I have a small side hustle building
Iridium short-burst data (SBD) terrestrial and
marine sensors for the
research community. Many of our units have cameras that allow sending back
images from anywhere in the world outside of cellular
service.
Recently I built a bolt-on unit for a friend's
offshore sailing trip to
Europe from the US. Attaching some pics of the device and example image.
Features:
-Website dashboard allows friends/family to view track of the
boat and send image commands to take their own photos. There are options to change resolution and
compression of the
images. Photos cost anywhere from $5-$15. Users can try to time the image for a great sunset
photo.
-Selfie Button allows those onboard
boat to immediately send back an image to the website and family/friends will be notified.
Camera can be rotated in any direction for privacy.
-Tracking cost is roughly $30/mo for updates every 2 hrs. This can be modified remotely through the Maker Buoy dashboard.
-Unit cost will be approximately USD $1,150, but exploring rental options for those don't want to
purchase the unit outright.
Looking for a volunteer who would be willing to install a unit for an upcoming
offshore trip to gain performance and
marketing data. Unit would be free, with tester only paying for monthly
fees and any personal photos taken.
Please get in touch with me if you're interested. Also looking for general interest in this capability. I'm aware
Iridium Go is available and popular, but this unit is self-contained and allows friends/family to participate in your adventure!
