Used Antares questions

I'm on the market for a used Antares 44 and curious if there are opinions about the best optional configurations (e.g. port forward arrangement, glass dodger above bimini, etc)? On the flipside, what are the known issues to watch out for? Thanks!

Re: Used Antares questions

A buddy of mine had an Antares and cruised throughout the Caribbean and up the East coast, he felt that it was a great boat. My wife and I joined him for two weeks going from Dominica to Grenada, very comfortable accommodations and loved the enclosed cockpit. I also joined him to help him bring it up from the Bahamas offshore and as a monohull sailor, it took a little while to get used to the wave slap and the jerky motion, but the trade offs are superior liveability.
One issue that I know of is that the boats equipped with the Volvo diesels had issues, but on the upside, Volvo replaced both engines under warranty!

I owned a 2016 44e, which I traded but would still be thrilled with if I hadn't. Excellent boats. I strongly recommend talking with Beth Simpkins at Rhumbline Yacht sales. She's the Antares specialist and has been for many years. She knows all of the variations chapter and verse and is widely trusted by Antares owners.

I’m curious, what did you trade your Antares in for and why?

I want to clarify the Volvo engine comment. The issue with the engines is not reliability or mechanical but emissions compliance with the US regulations. Volvo did a voluntary recall on Volvo D2-40 engines for US registered yachts that fell within a specific serial number range. Our boat was on the list, and we replaced our engines at no charge from Volvo. The Volvo engines have been great, and we never had any issues with our eight year old Volvo engines on our Antares.

Thanks for the useful clarification, M! Too bad that replacement was just for US flagged vessels.
