On older (2010/2011) Antares, has anyone seen the wood problems visible in this photo - mottling/loss of color as seen on the left, vertical splitting seen in the rounded bullnose of the wood on the right?

This is from the panel to the side of the starboard stairs, so it's a structural piece, and fiberglassed in - and can't be replaced. The only chance is to refinish it, or repair the crack.

Has anyone repaired similar problems and can offer a solution and a resource?

PS - the finish is probably polyester, applied with many coats, one on top of the next without sanding in between, then the final satin finish was achieved with motor oil and bronze or steel wool (this according to a fine woodworker who said he wouldn't take on the job)

Looks like too much washing.. You could start with trying with chemical paint remover in less visible spot. If it works continue with the rest. If not use this (dont know the name in english)

Presently on Cf, we have 2 marvelous shipwrights, minaret and mainesail. A PM to either of them will give you better than I can say.

To me, from your pic, I do not see a problem. If, at the join of the timber, there are voids, one can inject clear expoxy with a syringe (disposable}. Sand, revarnish with some kind of polyurethane varnish.

What I think has happened here, is that the guy didn't want the job and told you some gobbeldy gook. From the pic, it doesn't even need re-varnishing. But perhaps there's something important there that I flat out missed. If so, sorry.

On the lost color part, Before I would go to the extra effort of stripping and attempting to match the rest of the interior,
try 'Howard' 'Restore-A-Finish'
I've used it many times on boat and home projects, even antiques, very pleased with the results.
Of course, try a small test area maybe on the back first. Just to make sure You're happy with it.
Then your favorite varnish over it to protect.
IF the damage is bad it will leave the damaged area slightly darker than the not damaged.

The splits are tougher.
IF they're not raised, and even if just slightly raised, try a 'Puddy Stick' of the matching color. Found in your local paint section.
Rub it in, take a heat gun or your wife's hair dryer, heat it just enough to look wet, wipe off the excess with a clean rag. IF you wipe to much, apply a second time.

It looks like veneer that has been sanded very thin and almost through in areas or over cleaned/bleached.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'm reaching out to Mianret and Mainsail now.
Sorry my photo doesn't show detail better so you can see what I was asking about. The crack doesn't amount to a void, but we'll look at your epoxy idea.

Keep shopping for brightworkers. Ann is right, this is no big deal, though it does need work. A competent pro will knock this out for you. It would really help you to know for certain what the original finish is. Ask other owners here, at an owners group, or contact the manufacturer.

The woodworker who gave us the advice is experienced (successfully) working on these boats. Someone else wrote that maybe he just didn't want the job. I guess we just keep trying until we find the right helper and the right solution.
We'll be sailing from Florida to Maine this summer and back in the fall. I noticed that you're from Seattle, but if you happen to know any great woodworkers along the eastern seaboard whom you can recommend, please either post here, or PM me.

Is there any fix for sun-burned varnish? Wish there was an Aloe-Wood Restorer

The cure is to strip it to bare wood and begin the refinishing process, from scratch.

If it's only sunburned, you can also use citrus strip, to remove the old varnish, following the instructions that come with the product. This will get you back to bare wood.

Hope you find compatible varnish to the old stuff. That will save you having to go back to bare wood.

This is a job that one can do oneself.
