Re: CT Owner Group

Your vessel seems to be in every way well founded.

The only thing that we have on Hekowi that might be a small improvement is that our dodger is hand built of Starboard and Lexan. It is nearly identical in dimensions to yours, (as must be the case per the boom). But we have also gone with 5 windows. Our dodger is not leak proof, as a bow dive will result in some leak thru, but it is strong enough to stand on, and we have mounted a solar panel on a single curve planar top piece. There are also some hand grabs.

By building it myself, I was able to reassure myself of the sight lines, When I stand behind the wheel, I can see over the dodger, see the bow, and see the water directly ahead. The fold out bimini has a 6 inch gap, which allows a clear vision horizon. When I sit, I can see thru the lexan, I can still see the bow, but obviously not the water close ahead.

I ran a sailing club for many years, and the CT 47 center cockpit ketch is one heck of a vessel.

Just loved the aft platform! Now you have a CT49!

Re: CT Owner Group

I saw your pictures. Very nice.
I hope to be done with the major stuff soon.
But it is never as soon as you would like.
You are right...the work never ends.

Re: CT Owner Group

It might be valuable to post pictures and stories of problems solved on these boats. I, for one, am learning about them the hard way. Just about every system needs to be removed and replaced. I am not great at documenting everything, but I am making progress. I would be happy to share what I have learned.

Yes plenty of hard lessons learned.
I have just done the 'if in doubt, change it out' approach. Mine is a 1989 Cutter.
So far freshened up-
Motor Perkins to Yanmar with a couple of big alternators, Titanium chainplates, Dyneema rigging, 12-24v, thru hulls replaced with Groco or filled in, to name a few things.
I am pretty good at documenting in so far as costs, some pics Part numbers and suppliers contacts, but I would say most of this is standard 80s refit boat stuff, not so much CT specific.

My stuff, like most of us is reasonably specific to what I have done. But if you want any info on what I have done let me know.

Re: CT Owner Group

True, it is standard for 80s boats. I have not yet replaced the Perkins. Through hills all are replaced. I am about to replace the wiring and plumbing. Have replaced the prop shaft and cutlass bearing. Have painted topside, and am about to paint the entire deck. Chain plates replaced and teak deck removed. All the portlights need replacing. Hoping to get the bulk of it done in 2021. We'll see.

Re: CT Owner Group

Hello Everyone,
I am new at this group happy that I found it. I’m Jens and owner of a ta Chiao ct42 mermaid 1978.

Cause a like to pass a German certificate process a static calculations of my boat is necessary.

Unfortunately my boat comes without any technical description, draws etc from the hull and physics.

I’m wondering if anybody maybe have some technical details, drawing from it or has an idea where I can get it.

I already wrote to tachiao bro’s but no response.

Any info would help and I would really appreciate it.

Cheers Jens

Re: CT Owner Group

There's a CT48 for sale on YW right now in Ontario Canada:

https://www.yachtworld.com/boats/1975/ct-ketch-3860578/

I need to get better pictures of mine (also non-Perry CT48), but we've been pushing so hard on refit that I haven't got any really good ones.

What's interesting is that the layout on ours is very different from most, though it appears that they're all a bit different. Our galley is down, and not in the raised saloon, and there are two staterooms forward.

Odd bit of trivia, on ours, there are 51 cabinet doors, 13 drawers, and 5 people doors. I counted, because we're refinishing all the teak in the interior.

Re: CT Owner Group

Hmm, yeh that would be nice. Unfortunately I dont know of one. Speaking for myself but I would say that most of us go into this without much backup resources. However the good news is that these are, in my experience, just another boat.
I reckon if you got, or can rustle up someone at hand, Surveyor, or whoever you can find that know their way around boats, they will be your best bet. Generally these guys are not to difficult to track down. Ask around the yard or Marina.
Id look at the big stuff like (not a definitive list)- Rigging, chain plates, sails, soft decks, hull blisters, waterlogged rudder, motor condition, electrical wiring etc Id say you're a long way there.

Then the bits that have been updated in its life, especially Nav gear etc. Original 80s electronics, if they still work are going to be 'dated'.
But you also got to be aware that not even the best surveyor will find everything. I'm assuming this is 80s something vintage.

Depending on the previous owners, but the updating and upkeep of any boat this age is going to make all the difference. A fastidious previous owner that was not scared to overspend and keep it his pride and joy is generally the best bet. Or you, like many of us got a big project ahead. Cheap boats are always the most expensive.

Anyway good luck, and potentially welcome to the CT club.
