i thought zincs protect only about 2 ft around the area where they are installed...? why install one on a cable on the backstay, if it is likely to protect only the cable? ok, it's early morning here. maybe i need a coffee first to understand this...

In a bonded system the rig is in electrical contact with the engine block, the block is in electrical contact with the transmission, the transmission with the prop shaft and the prop shaft with the prop. Therefore, a zinc hanging over the side but wired to the rig will protect the prop and shaft. Not very effectively perhaps, but it will work. This arrangement should be used as additional protection only. It should not be relied upon as the sole means of protection from corrosion.

Due to the high currents involved in many seawater systems it is not uncommon to use impressed current systems. Impressed current systems use anodes (ICCP anode) of a type that are not easily dissolved into metallic ions, but rather sustain an alternative reaction, oxidization of the dissolved chloride ions.
