Xantrex Freedom 2000 Inverter/Charger problem

I installed the above mentioned inverter charger about 6 months ago in a major electrical systems refit.

Since I live aboard and have some things, primarily the refrigerator and some lights, running on 12 volts the automatic charging/standby cycle happens regularly. I also have some computers running off the inverter which does a pass through while on shore power.

This has all worked incredibly well. The inverter switches so quickly between shore power and inverting that I can unplug from shore power and the computers keep running.

Yesterday I was installing some LED christmas lights outside. When I came in the inverter was making a pulsating low frequency buzzing sound. It also seemed to be charging at 15+ volts, which implies that the charger got automatically switched to equalize mode. Subsequent experiments with actually going through the equalize on purpose didn't make any difference. After equalizing it would go through the 3 stages of charging and when it was time to switch to standby mode it would buzz and increase the charging voltage to 15+ volts again. It doesn't make the noise under any other conditions.

Xantrex's customer support hadn't heard of this before. I'm wondering if anyone else out there has.

Short of send the unit to a service center in Seattle or Calgary... no.

Not sure but if it was me I would disconnect all power to the Xantrex and then add one thing back at a time testing it just to see if there's an overload situation.

Good idea. I think at some point I had all the load removed to no avail, but I'll try it in a more methodical way.
