Westerbeke generator will not turn off except by mechanical

I have a westerbeke 7.6. The generator turns on without problem but Wii only turn off by the mechanical off switch on the right front. The off switch above the fuse does not work. The off switch on the remote and the generator will not turn it off. Maybe a stuck fuel solinioid?

Well, whatever’s wrong with the shutdown circuit ( also referred to as the protection circuit) you need to find out what it is and get it fixed. That shutdown circuit also acts in the presence of low oil pressure, high coolant temp, high mixer temp and probably over and under frequency so until its functioning again, your engine will continue to run with any of those faults and possibly harm itself.

Re: Westerbeke generator will not turn off except by mechanical

I appreciate it. My thought process was that if there was a problem with the circuit the generator should shut down. The switches except oil are default closed. So if they were shorted it should not work. The only common point is the fuel solinoid. The default should be closed to turn off the flow of fuel.. The k1 and k2 relays seem to work. Does this make sense or am I missing something. I do not have access to a westerbeke tech because we are cruising in Honduras. Any help is appreciated.

If the solenoid was cactus the engine wouldn’t start, its a 3 wire hot to run woodward solenoid, one pull in momentary circuit, a hold in circuit and an earth, you should be able to make it operate with a positive jumper BUT don’t keep power on the momentary terminal for more than 2 seconds, just tap it to verify a “click”. What year of manufacture is this genset, if this is the new boat it might have an electronic governor, my wiring diagram is for the early model
