Westerbeke generator issue- knowledge needed

i have a 10kw Westerbeke Generator model 10btda. Newly rebuilt / wired etd-- everything seems to be working however the start/run solenoid gets very hot as in too hot to touch-- is this normal? I have replaced the solenoid with a new one- same issue. Everything appears to move freely and the generator is producing the proper amperage and the correct number of cycles with varying loads- no issues except for this- any opinions from someone with experience with this generator or similar would be appreciated. Thanks

Re: Westerbeke generator issue- knowledge needed

Most (not all!) run solenoids on gensets are two stage units. There is a large, high power, coil to initially pull the plunger in, and a second, lower power coil to hold the plunger in. On some solenoids, this is handled internally, in others, the switch-over is externally controlled.

It is possible that your rebuilt wiring is not set up properly, and the higher power coil is being used to hold the plunger, and it is not switching over to the "hold" coil.

two different coils to pull and hold-- i am wondering if i have those two reversed somehow-- will check that out tomorrow when i get back to the boat. Thanks for the idea, i will check that out.

Also check the voltage to the solenoid. Lower volts draw more amps.

I have an 9btd. The run solenoid gets very hot as well. Has been the same for the last 10 years. Has never caused a problem

Lep:

I generally look forward to your insights, but low voltage draw more amps???

A DC solenoid is essentially a resistor, so a low voltage should draw fewer amps. The induction might cause an amperage surge but generally on disconnect, and short-lived.

I am happy to be instructed/corrected on this.
