Water pump enquiry

Hi there, I need some help re. water pump. It didn't work so I disconnected it and thought I would test it by putting positive to positive on battery, and negative to negative. All I got was a spark off the battery terminal.
So, I'm wondering is the pump faulty or is my test flawed.?
It's a Rule inline / submersible il200 pump.
Many thanks in advance

Re: Water pump enquiry

Sounds to me like the pump motor is shorted. Simply hooking the motor leads to a 12v battery should result in the pump motor running. Sparking is a bad sign!

Cheers!

Re: Water pump enquiry

Thanks Steve, do you have any idea how the motor could've shorted? I would like to avoid it happening again.

Cheers

Re: Water pump enquiry

They are designed as throw away units , only have a limited life span, water has probably entered thru the shaft seal and seized the motor or shorted,

There are some pumps these days that use a fully sealed armature and are brush less so water ingress is not so much of an issue (but you pay for it!)

Re: Water pump enquiry

I agree with what my other brother Steve said.

You may want to try a different model pump, depending on your application and budget. Or, replace with "like-for-like" and keep a spare on hand for when it fails again.

Cheers!

Re: Water pump enquiry

Thanks Steve and Steve, yes, that all makes sense. Will make a product upgrade and when that fails maybe just stick to the hand pump. Ah well, more gadgets, more to go wrong.
Thanks again for the replies.
Cheers
