BUT FIRST:

The symptoms also suggest one or more bad rectifiers in the alternator. Get it bench tested, replacing a bad rectifier is not that expensive and could restore normal operation.

Thanks everyone. Really great insights and suggestions! Bottom line is that the alternator is too small for my expanded battery capacity so I am going to do the right thing and install a 120 amp Balmar with external regulator.
